Question:

Marriage to a non-US citizen?

Hi! I'm planning on marrying a Bolivian in a couple years and despite all the research I have been doing, I have a few questions...

We plan to just get him a tourist VISA to the US because we're going to live in Bolivia, not the United States. We just want to come to the States to have a wedding for my family. That said, we will be officially married in Bolivia and then afterwards come to the States for a wedding... will the marriage in Bolivia be completely recognized in the USA or is there any reason to also be legally married here? If so, what would be required of him to legally marry - just his VISA and ID (passport)?

Thanks so much! By the way, the wedding/possible marriage in the States will be in either Minnesota or Kansas.

  1. You will save a lot of work if you get the green card after marriage start the application fee BUT he does have to come here once a year for a month for 5 years.

  2. The marriage in Bolivia is legal in the US.  If you are married to a non-citizen and try to get him a tourist visa for a wedding after you are already legally married, you may have some serious trouble explaining that away and proving that you two have no intention of living in the US.  Have the US wedding first, then go to Bolivia.
