Hi.. me and my longtime boyfriend want to get married but its all a bit confusing.

I am mexican and he is italian/mexican. we are living in London.

What would be the best thing to do? I'm guessing going to the Mexican Consulate is the easiest thing, but then how do we "revalidate" (?) the marriage in "italian law"? I really don't know how this works and would appreciate some information. Thanks!

  1. Assuming there are no complications (pending divorce, stuff like that), and you both are legally qualified to marry, I agree- you'll be married, period.

Your concerns seem to revolve around the validity of your London marriage as far as permanent residency in Italy is concerned. Your boyfriend and you should go to the Italian embassy and ask about making you a legal, permanent resident of Italy based on his status.

What might cause you some delay is his dual nationality- he may have to run a records check from both countries to "prove" he's eligible to marry.  You'll probably need to do the same thing, but you will only have one country's records to run.

Going to the Mexican consulate might be useful- you may have to let them know you plan to marry an Italian and live in EU, but that's secondary, isn't it?  Might be, the Mexican consulate won't care what you do.

I'd begin with your boyfriend at the Italian embassy.

  2. once your married , your married in any country. as long as the ceremony is legal you only need do it once !!

EXTRA That changes it slightly, you would need apply to Italy for residency on the grounds of your marriage to an Italian, once a resident with an EU (italian) passport you can travel and live anywere in the EU etc. etc.

  3. Assuming you both have a right to reside in the UK, you apply for a certificate at a registry office and you can then get married where you like (registry office, church or football stadium).  The marriage will be legally recognised in Mexico and Italy.  You might want to get certified translations of your marriage certificate into Spanish and Italian.
