Depends on the Franchise.  Hardly any are actually owned by Marriott, Hyatt, or IHG; rather a management company has ownership of the hotel and they pay a certain franchise fee to whatever brand appears on the flag they are flying.  The management company is responsible for the training of staff and the upkeep of the hotel.  Most major brands send inspectors to make sure the hotel is up to standard, but, in the end, it takes a lot for a management company to lose a flag at any given location.  Make note of the name of the management company at any hotels that you like then google them, chances are they have many properties with many brand names.  If you like the people though, that's a product of training and vision from the management company.

For me, I prefer the extended stay hotel chains offered by all three of these brands.  No one particularly beats the other, but the extended stay hotel room is much more comfortable.  As far as management groups go I prefer Waterford Hotel Group and Tharaldson hotels.
