I'm an Australian, born with Irish citizenship (my dad's Irish). I'm moving over there in a few months and want to know what will happen with my girlfriend. I know that if we get married that she can't be a citizen for a period of 5 years, but would she be able to live over there with me and work? We're in a long-term relationship btw.

  1. hi you

i am unsure if she will need a visa or not but if you check with the Irish embassy or check on there web site you should fine out and seen that your in a long-term relationship which could lead to marriage and you been an irish citizen i dont see her having problems if she does need a visa

  2. Been here, done this.  Once you are married, you take your marriage certificate, your passport, and your spouse's passport,  to the local gardai or immigration station.  You both need to go, you fill out a very short form, your spouse gets a stamp in her passport allowing her to live and work in Ireland legally.  She won't be a CITIZEN, she will just be a permanent resident for now.

She doest this the first time, and the stamp is valid for 1 year.  She does it the year after, and the stamp is valid for 5 years.  By then, she should be on her way to being a citizen.

  3. I think she'd have to get a visa, its best to contact your Irish embassy and ask them, they'd no the ins and outs better

  4. Yes, she'll be able to live with you and work.
