Mars Pucay makes the cut at the Avantha Masters - Golf News
Mars Pucay of Philippines carded a spectacular eagle on his final hole of the second round at the DLF Golf and Country Club, New Delhi, India on Friday, February 17, 2012, to successfully make the cut in the European Tour's Avantha Masters.
Pucay, who was among the top finishers at the ICTSI Philippine Open last week, mixed three birdies and an eagle with three bogeys to finish two-under par 70. His overall score at the end of second round was level par 144.
He looked satisfied with his performance and said that it was a great moment for him to make the cut in the prestigious European Tour event in India.
He added saying that the eagle on his final hole really made him feel relieved as it was enough to be among the players to compete in last two rounds.
Therefore, he then waited for the final cut line to finalise and start preparing for the final two rounds of the event.
When he was asked about the playing conditions on the course, he replied by saying that it was really hard early in the morning because of the near-freezing temperature in Delhi.
However, it started to help the players as the game progressed and the sun shone brightly in the sky.
"It was very cold in the morning. Temperatures dropped to 11 degrees Celcius according to organizers and that made it harder to play the course," said Pucay.
His compatriot, Angelo Que, had to leave him alone on the course after he missed the cut with a level par 72 score, a single stroke deficit to the cut line.
The overnight leader, Peter Whiteford of Scotland, who was sharing the first position with Spaniard Alejandro Canizares, remained on the top with a four-under par 68 second round score.
“Once it warmed up a bit I started to play better and gave myself a few chances,” Whiteford said, who is looking for his first ever European Tour victory.
“I wouldn’t say the swing feels brilliant, but sometimes that’s when you play your best golf - when you are struggling a wee bit,” he added.
On the other hand, Canizares slipped down to the 16th on the leaderboard after he faltered on the course to end at one-over par 73.
