While talking to media, former Olympique de Marseille star, Josip Skoblar said that his team can beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League just like they beat Borussia Dortmund earlier in the season
Coming up against Bayern Munich in the form that they are, is not a game any club would be anticipating so eagerly. However, Olympique de Marseille are going to face the German Bundesliga powerhouse tonight at the Velodrome.
Though the Ligue 1 side know that they are up against it, there is a mutual feeling among all those involved with the club, that a miracle can be achieved especially if this season’s European journey is looked at.
On their way to the quarterfinals, Marseille beat the likes of Borussia Dortmund and in the round of 16, knocked out Inter Milan which clearly means that Marseille are not going to be mere pushovers.
Though the task is difficult, a former Marseille player feels that if the team can beat Borussia Dortmund at their own turf, they can do well against the Bavarians as well.
71-year-old former Yugoslavia international Josip Skoblar played for Marseille between 1969 and 1975. During that time, the striker scored 138 goals in 159 games for Les Phoceens which makes him one of the best players in the history of the club.
Skoblar feels that Marseille do have a reasonable chance of beating Bayern Munich at the Velodrome.
“Nobody thought that we could beat Dortmund, by far the best team in Germany in my opinion. I like their collective quality. We had a chance to beat them twice and it’s a better team than our own. We beat them twice, they were eliminated, so why not Bayern?”
Skoblar then said that though Bayern are favourites, they will certainly not be getting a 7-0 win out of Marseille.
Led by the likes of Mario Gomez, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos, Bayern Munich are certainly heavy favourites to reach the semis of the Champions League.
Though Skoblar admits that Marseille can’t win the tournament, they still have the ability to upset a side that has a great record in Europe.
