Marseille president keen on buying Chelsea striker Didier Drogba
Vincent Labrune, the Marseille president, revealed that the Ligue 1 side would consider trying to sign Chelsea striker Didier Drogba if they could afford the 33-year-olds salary.
With just a year remaining on his current contract with the Blues, Drogba looks to be heading towards a Stamford Bridge exit this summer.
Last season, under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, 27-year-old http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 was brought in during the January transfer window, an obvious replacement for the Ivory Coast international.
Since the Spaniard’s arrival in the winter transfer window, Drogba’s stay with the London club does not seem like it will continue.
He was made to serve as a substitute, despite the fact that Torres failed to find the back of the net. At the end of the season, Torres had just one goal to his name.
After sacking Carlo Ancelotti, it was believed that Chelsea would offer Drogba a contract extension which would see him end his career with the Blues.
However, the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as the new Chelsea manager just a few days ago may have changed Drogba’s fate.
It is now rumoured that Drogba will definitely be leaving Chelsea, his destination however, has not yet been revealed.
The Ivorian was first linked with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, in an exchange deal for Croatian midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857.
The Spurs manager Harry Redknapp had previously admitted his desire to sign the Chelsea striker but was not too keen on the exchange deal with star midfielder Modric.
The rumour linking Drogba to White Hart Lane died down and he was soon being linked to other top European sides.
The likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 striker, but no official offer was made.
During his seven years at Stamford Bridge, Drogba has not ruled out a return to the Ligue 1 side, where he spent just a season.
Drogba signed for Marseille in the summer of 2003 from Guingamp for a fee of £3.3 million, he went on to make 55 appearances in all competitions and scored 32 goals.
He remains a Marseille legend to this day, which is why the Ligue 1 side are hoping to re-sign him this summer.
The Marseille president was certain the club could afford the players transfer fee, which is thought to be in the range of £10-15 million.
He was however, not sure if the club could afford the Chelsea hit-man’s wages, to make up for which he was positive they would have to sell some players.
Labrune said in an interview:
“The question is whether in terms of salary, I do not mean the transfer, Marseille have the means for four years to pay http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044.
I answer 'yes'. But we cannot afford 11 Didier Drogbas.
So is it possible? Yes, but in the case of departures.”
