  1. You should say Marseilles because it is a city of contrast.

Contrast between poor North and rich South (the famous avenue "Canebière" is the border).

Contrast between nice monuments, great historical and natural spots and the architectural anarchy of the suburbs.

Contrast between charm of Provence in some squares (Cours Julien, Place Thiars) and dangerosity of some places at night.

In spite of black spots, I have there for ten years and I must say that it is definitely worth seing.

  2. Hot, smelly, dusty, dirty, crime-ridden, overpopulated.

The marseillais have a hugely inflated self-opinion and a kind of inverted snobbery...being lower class from Marseille is a kind of badge of honour, seeing as they don't have much else to be proud of. They also have a strong regional accent which they deliberately make even more incomprehensible for anyone from outside the immediate area.

Suffers badly in comparison with Montpellier.
