Marsel Ilhan and Igor Kunitsyn move it into the second round of 2011 Sony Ericsson Open
Marsel Ilhan outplays Tobias Kamke
World Number 114, Marsel Ilhan cruised into the second round of the 2011 Sony Ericsson open after moving past German Qualifier Tobias Kamke.
The right-handed Turkish outplayed his German opponent in two straight sets taking not more than fifty four minutes. Since this was the pair’s first meeting on tour, Ilhan now leads their head-to-head 1-0.
The first set saw Ilhan establishing early dominance, breaking Kamke in the eighth game. Recording an average 57% on his first serve, Ilhan registered a remarkable 100% winning percentage on it as he run towards victory.
Never allowing the German to recover, Ilhan sailed into a 6-2 victory and moved on ahead to the second set with dominion.
In the final set, the right-handed Turkish struck three aces and hit 63 per cent of the first serves, recording an average winning percentage of 67 per cent of his first serves. Kamke, on the other hand, only managed to register
a meager 47 per cent of his first serves.
The Turkish successfully managed to convert 100 per cent of the break points securing a breadstick win.
Ilhan last made it to the second round here in 2010, coming from a first round win against Pablo Cuevas, before losing to Juan Monaco.
Marsel Ilhan will meet Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the second round.
Igor Kunitsyn outplays Robert Kendrick
Russia’s Igor Kunitsyn, a qualifier into the tournament automatically moved into the second round after American Robert Kendrick retired from the game during the first set.
Serving in the opening set, Kendrick had a tremendous start to the game as he struck eight aces and possessed an impressive winning percentage of first serves. Though he landed a slightly lower 56 per cent of first serves than
Kunitsyn’s 63 per cent in the first set, he won a whopping 100 per cent winning percentage on his first serves.
On the other hand, Kunitsyn fired in two aces and hit 63 per cent of his first serves. He managed to bind 71 per cent of his first serves as opposed to Kendrick’s 100 per cent. With this win Kunitsyn has improved his year to date
win–loss record to 3-4 and now moves on ahead to face David Ferrer of Spain in the second round.
