Marsh Dragon taken to beat Sorella Bella in Once Every Preston Guild Maiden Fillies´ Stakes at Carlisle
Mark H. Tompkins’ young filly, Marsh Dragon, shaped nicely on her debut, and should appreciate the step up to six furlongs and 192 yards. Her confidence is now at the seventh sky, and one can comfortably expect her to get the better of reliable yardstick,
Sorella Bella.
Marsh Dragon was given no respect by the bookmakers last time. In the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Yarmouth, the betting gurus gave her the second lowest odds of 33 to 1.
In the hands of Darryll Holland, the novice made the bookies realise that what a huge mistake they committed. Despite being under tremendous amount of pressure, she was always prominent.
Owned by Ken Lawrence, the filly chased the leaders brilliantly. Her hard work paid off a couple of furlongs before the wire, when she managed to get a decent lead.
The daughter of Beat Hollow was well in command, but lack of speed inside the final furlong allowed Nargys to surpass her. She stayed on one pace in the final moments and as a result, missed the first place by two and a half lengths.
It was an awful loss, but her connections had plenty of positives to extract out. The surface is almost similar here at Carlisle, and the filly is expected to present an equally fine show, if not better.
Her main objective will be to tackle Sorella Bella, who is performing consistently since the start of her career – although she is yet to get off the mark. Trained by Mick Channon, the 2-year-old has grabbed two seconds and four thirds so far, and it shows
how consistent she is.
Yet, the bay filly will need a slice of luck to open her account. She clearly has had plenty of chances, which she unfortunately wasted. Running well in defeat seems to have become her habit, and this gives other horses a mega chance.
Marsh Dragon, who showed a lot of promise on her first outing, is likely to seize this opportunity, and beat Sorella Bella in the class 5 event, getting started at 14:50 GMT.
