Marsh shines as Australia dominate England in second one-dayer
Australia defeated England by 46-runs in the second match of the seven-match one-day international (ODI) series at Hobart. The hosts now lead the series by 2-0.
English captain Andrew Strauss elected to field first after winning the toss as there was some moisture in the wicket. The decision paid-off immediately, as Australia lost their openers early. The hero of the last match for Australia, Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326, wasn’t
able to trouble the English bowlers at all and was the first man to be dismissed.
Wicketkeeper batsman Brad Haddin wasn’t able to score too many runs either, as he dragged the ball onto the stumps after scoring just five runs. Stand-in Australian captain Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 and David Hussey didn’t last long at the crease. The hosts were struggling
at one stage with four wickets down for just 33 runs.
Shaun Marsh, who was brought into the team in place of the injured Michael Hussey, then joined Cameron White at the crease. The pair took the team out of trouble with a century-stand. White got out after scoring 45 runs off 76 balls. He chipped the ball
straight into the hands of the bowler Michael Yardy. White’s wicket saw Australia collapse once again in the match, as the hosts lost four wickets for just nine runs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 were 142 for the loss of eight wickets in 37 overs.
However, Marsh didn’t lose focus and continued to play his shots freely. He got good support from Doug Bollinger as the pair constructed an 88-run partnership. Marsh completed his century and marked his successful return in the team. Bollinger and Marsh
were dismissed off successive deliveries as the Australian team amassed 230 runs in 48.2 overs. Marsh scored a brilliant 110 runs and Bollinger got 30 runs off 30 balls.
Chris Tremlett and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ajmal-Shahzad-c42489 took three wickets each in the match for England whereas Tim Bresnan and Yardy took two wickets each. The visitors however, never settled down chasing the Australian target and were bowled out for 184 runs in 45 overs.
The only resistance came from Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell. Both batsmen scored 32 runs each to top score for their team, and apart from them all the other batsmen were below par. Most of the batsmen got starts but failed to capitalise on them. Bollinger
was menacing with the ball as he took four wickets in the match. He got good support from veteran pacer Brett Lee who took two wickets. The only disappointment for Australia was that Nathan Hauritz and Shaun Tait sustained injuries in the match.
Marsh was named the man-of-the-match for his heroic century. Both teams will now face each other in the third match of the series on Sunday, 23
January at Sydney.
