Marta Sirotkina outshines Yuliya Beygelzimer to reach round two – Ankara Cup 2012
Russian starlet, Marta Sirotkina, eased past the Ukrainian challenger, Yuliya Beygelzimer, in straight sets at the Ankara Cup 2012 on Monday. She notched up a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Ukrainian to power into the round of 16 at this indoor hard court tournament taking place from 17th to 23rd December in Ankara, Turkey.
Seeded fifth in this event, Sirotkina displayed brilliant tennis to overpower Beygelzimer in their second meeting. The players last fought each other at the Phuket ITF event earlier this season and after bagging this match, Sirotkina maintained her winning record. As a result, the Russian comfortably progressed into the pre-quarters at the Ankara Tennis Club.
Sirotkina made a comfortable entry at this ITF (International Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit event. She got the desiderated break in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. Apart from losing her edge in the very next game, the Russian capitalised on another break chance and put her nose ahead once again. She held her composure and after breaking her opponent’s serve again, the Russian clinched the opener with a 6-2 score line. She failed to block the only breakpoint she faced but converted three out of four break chances to her advantage.
Ranked 159th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Sirotkina kept her momentum rolling in the following set. She drew the first blood in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. Apart from losing her edge in the eighth game, the Russian availed another break opportunity and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to three. She blasted away two out of three breakpoints she encountered and cashed two out of four break chances to achieve her goal.
Next up for Sirotkina is the winner of the match between Ukraine’s Olga Savchuk and the Uzbekistani qualifier, Nigina Abduraimova.
The seventh seed, Aleksandra Krunic, will accompany Sirotkina in the following round. She overpowered the Romanian contestant, Madalina Gojnea, in straight sets to progress at these Turkish courts. The Serb fended off late resistance to clobber a 6-3, 7-6(1) score line in almost one and a half hour to advance.
