Martellus Bennett not up for returning to Dallas Cowboys for the next season – NFL News
After the end of his four-year rookie contract with Dallas Cowboys, tight end, Martellus Bennett, who is a free agent now, has decided against entering into new contract negotiations with the management and is likely to join any other team in the future.
Bennett, who never played as regular starter with Cowboys, is searching a more challenging role in which he could become a regular starter and entrusted with additional responsibilities.
He began his professional National Football League (NFL) career with Cowboys in 2008 and started seven games while playing 16.
In the next season, he started six games while playing 14 and in 2010-11 season, he started 11 games while playing 16.
In the last season, he played 14 games and started seven of them. He recorded a total of 144 yards on 17 receptions without scoring any touchdown.
His rookie year was the only one where he scored four touchdowns. For the next three years, he played more as a blocker rather than a passer or a rusher and could not score any touchdown.
For changing his role and get more responsibilities, Bennett is looking for a team that could trust his abilities and have faith in “what I do and what I bring and what I have to offer”.
After learning all the required tricks of the trade, or at least that’s what Bennett thinks, he wants to test his abilities with any other team.
He said:
“I want a team that believes in me and the things I'm capable of doing. I still believe I haven't yet scratched the surface of my potential, and I'm only getting better and better daily, even now.”
Bennett pointed out that he had no grudges against the Cowboys and said that he played with some competent players, who helped him nurturing his skills.
He said of his plans:
"I'm not opposed to staying, I'm not opposed to going. I think the Cowboys have been a great organisation for me. I've learned so much. It's been a humbling experience being here. I got to play with one of the best, and I'm kind of ready to branch off and
become my own entity."
It is still not clear where Bennett will head next as he has not spoken of his interest in any particular team.
