Martha Spilioti wins Women 14-15 200m butterfly gold: Day one – 2012 NSW Metropolitan Championships
Martha Spilioti of SSSD won gold medal of the Long Course 200m butterfly discipline in Women 14-15 year old category on opening day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) Metropolitan Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday, March
3.
Spilioti faced tough competition from Molly McNamara of RIPL, but with her remarkable sprint in the final lap, she managed to secure the medal rostrum for gold medal. She followed McNamara’s lead in the first three laps of the race but with her smothering
efforts, she stifled hopes of her strongest challenger in the final lap.
The 15-year-old McNamara led the way to her opponents in first lap as she clocked an effort of 30.92 seconds. With her stimulating efforts, she remained 0.50 seconds ahead of Spilioti, who completed her opening lap of the swim in 31.42 seconds.
The same continued in second lap, where McNamara sustained her fastest spot and ended her first half of the swim with an effort of 1 minute and 06.84 seconds. She was trailed by Spilioti, who kept following her lead and posted an effort of 1 minute and 07.21
seconds, suffering a deficit of 0.37 seconds.
McNamara displayed her tremendous skills in the third lap, where she hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 43.44 seconds. She was trailed by Spilioti, who covered the same distance with an effort of 1 minute and 43.68 seconds.
Subsequently, Spilioti elevated her efforts in the last lap, where she stunned the arena by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 20.06 seconds for gold medal. With her invincible efforts in the final lap, she gained an advantage of nearly two seconds over
McNamara, who settled on the finishing wall for second position by clocking 2 minutes and 22.75 seconds.
The third spot of the event was secured by Alice Stuart of MQU, who remained just 0.72 seconds slower from her former finisher and earned bronze medal of the event with the timing of 2 minutes and 23.47 seconds.
In addition, the podium finishers collected awards and accolades for their notable efforts after the conclusion of session.
