Okay so I am in need of some Martial Arts films, help me out and give me some suggestions.

I have watched, House of Flying Daggers, Fearless, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Iron Monkey and Hero.

I WILL be watching The Forbidden Kingdom when it comes out on DVD.

I need some suggestions for some other Martial Arts films, hopefully set in Ancient China but I can watch Modern as well.

  1. If you can find it, The Five Deadly Venoms is a classic.

  2. blood sport

  3. Are you only interested in Chinese derived MA?

there is so much good choreography in a lot of other movies.

I enjoy the gritty realism of many films that have no themed style.

Hollywood has ruined many a good film through theatrics that are dumb, and at least I can agree on the depth of beauty in the asian styled movies, but my idea of martial arts films arent just involving dedicated films to the genre. many a good fight scene pops up when you least expect it.

  4. Some good Chinese films are; Return of the Dragon, The Chinese Connection, and Drunken Master. A great American martial arts film is The Perfect Weapon. A good European martial arts film is Bloodsport.

  5. My all time favorites:

    Kung Fu Hustle

    or

    Shaolin Soccer.

  6. It depends on what kind of fight choreography you enjoy.  Based on what you've listed, all of these actions were done by Yuen Wo Ping and Ching Siu Tung, so if you like their actions (although imo, Ching Siu Tung's action is much more fantastical than Yuen Wo Ping's), I suggest you check out more movies where they were action directors.  Below are some good recommendations:

    Yuen Wo Ping:

Ye Yan - The Banquet (Ancient China)

    Fist of Legend (Modern China)

    Wing Chun (Ancient China)

Tai Chi Master (the one with Jet Li)- (Ancient China)

Once Upon A Time in China part I and II-(Ancient China)

    Drunken Master-(Ancient China)

    Snake in Eagle's Shadow-(Ancient China)

    Ching Siu Tung:

    Heroic Trio- (Modern China)

    Butterfly and Sword-(Ancient China)

    Moon Warriors- (Ancient China)

New Dragon Gate Inn- (Ancient China)

Warlords- (Ancient China, but the fighting is much more on the realistic side)

Duel to the Death (Ancient China)

Ming Jian - The Sword (Ancient China)

A personal recommendation is to check out Lau Kar Leung's works- although they are old, it was him that set the standards for kung fu cinema (in addition to Bruce Lee) and the action choreography he uses is much more based on traditional Kung Fu than modern Kung Fu, here are my personal favorite of Lau Kar Leung:

Seven Swords (Ancient China- a recent movie, but probably one of Lau Kar Leung's last)

Legendary Weapons of China (Ancient China)

    Dirty Ho (Ancient China)

Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (Ancient China)

36th Chamber of Shaolin and Return to 36th Chamber of Shaolin (Ancient China)

    I hope this all helps!
