  1. Boxing is a Martial Art.

  2. It all comes down to the teacher. Some boxing teachers will literally teach you so that you can get into fights with blokes who start on you, others will tell you to avoid it until its necessary, ALL martial arts teachers (im sure there are some exceptions) will teach you not to fight however.

  3. In truth, Boxing is a martial art, being an effective method of self-defense and body training, while at the same time a spectator sport. Many people tend to seperate Boxing from traditional martial arts because it is devoid of teachings of moral or spiritual values, which is something intrinsic to most Japanese and Chinese arts. In my opinion, all martial arts teach survival and when one learns to survive, one learns about the self. All the techniques and exercises in Boxing teach a person to understand their own body, its intracacies of movement and its connection with the mind. Boxing definitely teaches its practitioners discipline, and with discipline a person is more prepared to face challenges. Boxing is a martial art because it teaches you 1-5 of what you listed... Boxers know how to fight, they learn how to respect other fighters (to not underestimate opponents). Boxers are knowledgeable on when NOT to fight, because they restrain themselves to fighting in a particular weight class; in addition, they usually understand how lethal their hands are (and how easy it is to break their own hand). Being healthy and knowing how to defend oneself naturally breathes confidence. All martial arts teach discipline that helps empower the individual; after that, its the practitioner's own choice on how he/she wishes to use that power.

  4. Here we go again with more whinging over "real" martial arts versus combat sports.  You're obviously bringing your own prejudices to the question, otherwise you wouldn't be stating opinion in the form of a question.

A good instructor/coach will instill positive traits in their students **regardless** of what sport or martial art they teach, be it football, boxing or Raykwondo.
