  1. Women have proven to be very effective in the martial arts. Don't sell yourself short. I have seen evidence so.

  2. My sister can handle it and she is 10. Yes you will get bruised when you work on your ki-ay's (yelling) when you get punched but it is still so fun. No one wants to hurt you unless the are psycho.

  3. Find a class with other female training partners that have been there for a year or longer (they'll have colored belts).  If you find the right place you'll love it.  Don't worry about getting bruised...if they were rough on their beginners then they wouldn't have any students

  4. yes they can. that depends on you. how much you put into it.if you take it for sport.theres less chance of you getting bruised. if you join a dojo thats mainly for self defense. you certainly will. but you get use to it after a while

  5. lol of course u can handle it but make sure u pick out the right martial art style.

most styles differ like they consist of grappling which is like wrestling

and some are jus solid striking

either way if u keep at it i bet that youll do great

thats the key as long as u keep at it then no doubt ull be great.

you should expect a workout everytime u come to class.

well u can get bruises but just little ones xD

  6. Can women handle it  -- ABSOLUTELY!

Unless you are careless or have a very bad teacher, the only chances a person might have of getting bruised are when they are doing full contact sparring.

Full contact is not practiced in all schools.

Sparring of any kind is a long way off yet if you are just getting started.

  7. Go for it, don't worry about the bruises they will heal. What you will learn will be worth it.

  8. My daughter took it and loved it, she's great.  Lots of women enjoy it.  Once in a great while you might get a wild hit but it's not intentional.  It's very physical and the work outs need to be consistent.  My daughter is very petite and she's won many trophy's against men and women much larger than her, it's awesome to watch.

    Good Luck To You

  9. Take Krav Maga to learn how to defend yourself.

it is the national martial arts of Israel designed to be used by their soldiers (male and female).

It is easy to learn and they will condition you to handle it.

So you get in shape and can learn how to disable an opponent (including armed assailants).

look up some vids of it on youtube:

remember the best way to win a fight is to never put yourself in a compromising position.  So be smart and stay safe.

  10. a good teacher does not let you get hurt like that. your question is best for your teacher. I would answer with, no.

  11. Totally, But yes you will get bruised, but so do the men. It takes a couple of months to grt used to it but if you keep trying you can be realy good.

  12. ill do you one better...women are often times BETTER MARTIAL ARTISTS THAN MEN. and i'm a man.

why?...BECAUSE they are smaller...BECAUSE they are weaker...they HAVE to become BETTER...they cant rely or fall back on their brute strength....they simply have to be good at it if there's any chance of it working. so you see...being smaller and weaker can...from a certain point of view...be a blessing in disguise.

many women fight in mma. many women become fantastic instructors (search cynthia rothrock, grace casillas, june castro, kathy long, karen shepard..many more)

im pretty good at boxing/sparring...most people i fought i beat...the only guy other than my instructor that just beat me down bad was...about 5'3 maybe 130 lbs....i am 6'5...250. ...he beat me silly lol

no matter who you are or what you study, you have to focus on yourself. there will always be things i can do that you cant...becaues im bigger than you, im stronger than you, i hit harder than you....but on the other hand...you are more limber than i am...more agile that i am...faster than i am...etc

    concentrate on that.

bruises...if you're serious about your traiing..yes you will get bruises probably. but no big deal. noones there purposely to hurt you ;) ..what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger.

actually one of my tkd instructors was a woman, she was quick and those d**n lil knuckles of hers hurt sometimes!! lol

my sister is about 5'5 maybe 115 lbs...and she can throw me. its easy once you realize how to do it. using momentum, disrupting balance..etc...the person cant fight you when they cant use all their strength.

example i use alot...my strength is 10..yours is 5. i win if you fight me strenght on strength every time. ...but if i try to shove you rather than standing there trying to stop me...you just move to the side and make me miss...and kick me in the groin...ill naturally bend forward, if you then grab my hair or arm...clothes or whatever..and pull me farther forward just a few inches...i am way off balance...i cannot muster any strength to fight you when im in such a state. so now my strength is 3...and yours is still 5. so you are now stronger than i am and can defeat me.

likewise..if i grab your shoulders from the front and again, rather than trying to stop me you just twist sideways deflecting my power (instead of opposing it) and squat down and slam your hip/butt into my groin area (as long as your hips are lower than mine..which will be easy since you are shorter)..and wrap your arm around my waste...you can throw me because im already moving in the direction you want me to go. all you have to do is bump me up with your hips slightly and pull my already moving body over you and ill fall on my face or worse.

sometimes if im moving fast enough you can just duck and ill trip over you or something. the key is to not try to match strength with me but use my power against me.

maybe i grab your shirt and start pushing you backward forcefully...you can just grab my shirt or my arms or something and sit down and put your foot on my belly and flip me over you.

you can go to this website and see videos of a small girl throwing a larger man (her teacher)

    www.shinkoohapkido.com

right on the front page is a good example (video) of not fighting force but redirecting it. after that you can go up top and click on "media" and "videos" and watch them all and get more of an idea.

  13. Women can definitely handle it! I'm one of them. But I will say that the martial arts are not for everyone. To become 'good at it' requires lots of practice, determination, and hard work. But the payoff is incredible, plus the martial arts are a lot of fun!

The length it takes to become good at martial arts is really up to the person. Generally the time span is years and years. Some people and martial arts just click, and others have to really pay attention and work hard.

As a beginner, you probably will not be bruised. But bruises do happen occasionaly, so be forewarned. Really, you shouldn't encounter much that would give you a bruise until you start sparring, and that's going to be quite a while until / if you start that depending on the martial art you're doing.

For your first class you will probably learn some of what's expected of you in class, how to bow, some of the basic stances, and maybe a punch or a block. I really don't know since different instructors have different priorities.

    Good luck with your training!

  14. women are very good martial artists, even if you have not tried it before, you already have a foundation for it, flexibility, most martial arts require extreme flexibility so that they can kick high and do advanced techniques, you will not become bruised at first maybe later in a year or two, but what is very important is that you have to commit yourself, no holding back!

    have fun!

  15. h**l yes women can handle it!

I've been taking tkd for about eight months now and it's awesome. You probably won't be the only girl in the class.

I'd say it takes about 4 or 5 months to get comfortable with the movements.

You probably won't get bruised for a while. Usually you have to be at a certain belt level before you can spar, which is the main thing you'd get bruised doing.

  16. If you're just taking martial arts classes, not a mixed martial arts fighting class, then no you won't be bruised. In martial arts classes you practice form and correct movements before you learn to spar (fight each other) and when you do spar you are well padded and only allowed to hit in safe areas.

It takes years to master the martial art of your choice, but to be "good" for your learning level only takes practice and attention. If you have decent physical ability and can take instruction well, you can be good at most basic skills in a matter of weeks. You will need to keep practicing your techniques and forms as you progress to maintain your knowledge base.

If you're in a fighting class, you may be bruised depending on your instructor and their teaching method, though I doubt it for beginner's lessons. I've never participated in a fighting class, but I would imagine you learn how to fight correctly before anyone throws a punch at you.

  17. Yes you can handle it. what type of martial art are you taking? usually they won't really go THAT hard on you in your first class, you'll probably learn the basic moves: kicks, punches, etc... that being said, you may do much more. best to find out from your martial arts teacher. you may take a few years to be good at it, but you'll have to practice outside your classes as well. As for the bruising, i think that comes later when you have more experience.
