Question:

Martial arts Thumbs up or Thumbs down?

I've noticed something that I think is premature in rating answers. I've noticed that some people are really quick to give a thumbs up or thumbs down before many people have had a chance to give their answers. Many times I'll see a question with 2 to 3 answers yet there are already several thumbs up or down. Later when there are many more answers there are often much better answers. By the time the answers near the ending it would seem that the votes do not do justice because of people voting before enough people have had time to give their answers. What do you think about it.? Do you agree that people should wait a little longer to vote after seeing what others have posted?

  1. thumbs downs are childish and uncalled for.it seems i have attracted a couple of thumbs down retards who have been stalking me,also someone keeps reporting my answers for no reason and it only happens in martial arts.you don't lose points for thumbs downs as someone referred to and the thumbs downs/ups have no impact on the best answer or the 10 points(points dont mean anything anyway).the thumbs downs and false violations do get annoying and you will notice a definite increase now there are so many kids on here.to many ppl use thumbs downs and more specifically violation reports as weapons instead of there intended purpose.

  2. No. I don't agree. If you wait too long to give the thumbs up or down. The question may already be resolved or in voting. Then you can't give the thumbs when it is in voting. You may never get back to that question.

  3. Nah. What would happen then is you wouldn't get any thumbs at all hardly. People look at your question when they look at your question. They are not going to come back later. In the end it just doesn't really matter. Who cares?

And I give Martial Arts a thumbs up! LOL!

  4. I agree with the fact that some people give premature thumbs up/down, and as mentioned earlier there are also those immature folks who just go around clicking thumbs down. I think that it would be a valuable tool for helping to decide the best answer out of many similar answers if used correctly but to me the world is just too immature for that to happen.

I think the same thing happens with voting on answers. Some make great voting decisions and some don't. I'll mention that I've had my answers chosen as top which are really quite undeserved, but that's the way of the world.

I used to put my sources down with my answers. IE experience, education, etc. However, I then thought, why? Why do I need to PROVE to people that the information I give is well thought out and or correct fact? If it is, then people will see that and my answers will be respected, and my advice will be heeded. So the only time I put down sources is when I have to look up the answer immediately, and not from my head.

I will also add that the questions on here are so many and so similar with the negative nature, that I have noticed myself turning quite sour and cynical. Even having some questions booted off here.

I don't generally thumbs down, but if the answer is demeaning in any way, or if it is false I will. I read the answers before me, and if I do not have anything informative enough to add then I will not answer the question.

I know this might be more than you asked for but, I just thought maybe people will read and see how I behave and begin to understand my outlook. I think the thumbs up is warranted if the answer is good, well thought out, and kind, even if it's the only one. I will thumbs up to those warranting it.

  5. The thumbs up and thumbs down have no affect on the voting of an answer.

Voting for an answer only comes when a asker has let their question go without picking an answer. Then you will see a question with "In Voting" is the votes made then that counts.

Thumbs up and Thumbs down really have no bearing on the voting at all. Just is what people are thinking at the time.

Some of us have people following us around thumbing all of our answers down, not realizing it has no bearing on anything lol. It does give you points if you win best answer.

For example if I win best answer and I had 3 thumbs up, I would get 13 points, instead of just the 10 for best answer.

I think getting thumbs downed might subtract some points, but I am not sure.

Anyway, my point is that thumbs up or down have little to do with voting or how a best answer is picked. You can't vote on a question for best answer until it has lapsed the period in which the asker could have chosen the best answer.

Then it goes to voting, once it is there no new answers can be entered, and all information as far as profile stuff disappears.

    An example would be:

After you place your vote you will see a vote count. Notice how none of the answers have thumbs up or down, yet some have votes. You will also notice you can't thumbs up or thumbs down any of the answers, just vote for the best. Where you can only vote for one answer, you can thumbs up multiple answers.

Again, that is because the thumbs up or thumbs down have no relevance to the votes, Votes are only counted in the manner that users go in and vote for best answer after the asker has let the question go.

Thumbs up or thumbs down have no bearing on those votes, aside from assigning you more points if you win best answer.

I think that is the jist of it.

Think of the thumbs up or down as just a feedback mechanism, it doesn't really mean much. It allows you to say "hey I agree with that" or "this guy is just way off mark". Again, it doesn't mean anything if it goes to voting, it still has to be voted on individually, with thumbs up or down having no relevance.

    Just one more illustration:

Notice in this answer that Craig G has two thumbs up, but no votes?

Hope that explains it some, people should be as carefree with their thumbs up and downs as they want.

  6. It'll be a little ironic if that's what happens in this question. Anyway, I have to agree with Judomofo on this one.

  7. I never thumbs down. If I really don't like answer I tell that person so out in the open thumbing down is for punks.I have had as many as 5 thumbs down and still got the best answer chosen by the asker.

YAHOO should change the rules you can't thumb up or down without giving your own answer and the answerer should be notified of who did what.

  8. Sometimes we cannot be there to vote (whether it is because the asker chooses, or just timing when the question is in voting), so giving the thumbs up and down is very useful. It may help others choose their favourite answer.

I tend to give thumbs down to people who respond in a really insipid manner (like answering a serious question with a typical "you should do x*x instead" when it has no relevance, or "I am a 15th degree black belt and I still got my butt kicked, so you should blah blah blah" ... we have all seen them, right?). Answers like that just waste our time.

I might also give a thumbs down to an answer that seems way off the mark and is likely to cause more problems than help... But in that case, it is just an expression of my opinion for when I do not have the time to write out a full answer to express my own thoughts/facts/etc.

But I do not give thumbs down when I JUST disagree. But I do give a thumbs up if I agree, again...so that it may influence voting. But that is just the way I like to do it...

  9. I give thumbs up often when someone has given an answer that would have been similar to mine.   Or a good answer that I wouldn't have given, but was well though out and correct.

I give thumbs down to people who bash someone else, give misleading or completely incorrect answers.

Thumbs up or down do not affect the Voting.  They are not votes for or against an answer.  The Votes come later and are usually done by people who did not answer.   Although the asker should pick an answer that they feel best completed their question.
