  1. idk about the animal part but i used to take it and its mostly upright combo fighting with a mix of alot of punches and kicks

  2. Chinese Kempo is an art that has rapid combinations of strikes and grappling and throws. The object was put the opponent on the ground and finish them. It was the base for American Kenpo. The Tracys claim to teach Chinese Kempo but it is not. Students of Professor Chow do Chinese Kempo. Chow removed the ridiculous and useless movements from Mitosie's Kempo such as catching a fist. He also added more streetwise self defense.

  3. It is based on the 5 animals concept, Tiger, Dragon, Leopard, Snake, Monkey, but there is a greater focus on the Tiger and the Dragon.

It differs from Japanese styles of karate in that it's movements are primarily circular, opposed to linear.

  4. chinese kenpo/kempo is basically an umbrella term. there is no one specific style of chinese kenpo....the word kenpo isnt even chinese, so how can the art be? it isn't.

the word kempo is the japanese translation of chuan fa(chinese for fist law/method)

any art COULD BE called kempo, and many have been over the years. like in china you have shaolin chuan, taiji chuan, pakua chuan...etc. in japan you have shorinji kempo, in hawaii you have kara ho kempo..etc etc

kempo as most westerners know it today developed and evolved mainly in hawaii. it is truly an american adaptation of japanese/okinwan and chinese arts all mixed together with an emphasis on modern attacks. it is reminiscent of both japanese and chinese arts and has elements of both.

but there is ALOT of controversy concerning who trained with who, and what not. most historians in hawaii believe chow never studied any kung fu at all in his life. and that actually danzan ryu jujutsu had a big role in developing what chow taught. yet...some kempo poeple (like the tracy's) do forms that are almost ripoffs of famous kung fu styles, and the fact that they name their techniques (lone kimono, ripping tigers..etc) suggests a chinese influence. you have people like fred villari who never want to admit that he studied with nick cerio, and nick cerio incorporated more jujutsu and shotokan kata in his "kenpo". tales of early kempo practitioners like emperado's (linked with kajukenbo) being leg breakers for organized crime...i even heard once that wally jay (small circle jujutsu) originally started training to teach his gang buddies...on it goes, there's alot of shady and/or questionable history associated with the kempo arts of hawaii.

suffice to say most kempo is striking based. and the grappling that is there, most likely came from jujutsu.

there are many styles of kempo. some say kenpo, some say kempo. some say chinese, some don't.

    shaolin kempo karate

    shaolin kempo

    american kenpo

    chinese kenpo

    kajukenbo

karazempo goshin jutsu..the list goes on and on. but if you watch any of them, they have a unique commonality. efficiency in striking especially.

some principles i learned in kempo.

strike from wherever your hand happens to be (no pre-loading or strange chambering) ..and kempo tends to be more circular than alot of other karate styles.

but one of the biggest kempo traits is how they use their strikes not necessarily to injure...but to create a reaction in their opponent, which opens up the next strike. ie...if you grab me from behind, and i smash my elbow up under your chin, you will bend backward, which will nicely bring your groin to my hammerfist, which will make you crouch and bend back forward into my backfist...etc etc.

ignore the history and politics. kempo is a good art.
