Question:

Martial arts question....?

so im a big dude im 6'0 and 300lbs what would be a good martial arts form for me. and don't say sumo. i tried going on diets and they don't work. so if i take martial arts maybe it can teach me some self discipline and get in shape.

  2. There are allot of styles that will slim you down, but not all the schools of those styles train right. Go around to some of the schools in your area and look at the practitioners. If they look the way you want to look join that school, if not keep moving on.

    Even if the class is going full power, it doesn't mean YOU are getting a work out. You must be willing not to short cut the exercises (doing half push ups when no one is looking, laying flat on your back and only doing neck crunches instead of crunches from the abdomen). The class is just there as a guide and support, but it is really up to you to push your self to get the best work out you can for the class, after all your paying for it right?

  3. I agree with a couple of those guys. It is not about the art or style of martial arts. There are 2 factors. The instructor and you. You will the best determining factor. It matter most what you put into it. The instructor is the guide, but you have to be willing to push yourself. Plus you have to workout at home as well as in class.

  4. I'd say go for an athletic style over a traditional style.  I think Western Boxing would fit the bill.  Any art that uses a lot of footwork, high cardio, and athleticism will help you get in shape but remember, physiques are made in the kitchen as much as in the gym.

    I would be very upfront with your instructor before you begin and tell them that you want help with getting in shape.  Some schools focus on technique more than fitness.  Boxing schools tend to focus on both.

    From a diet standpoint don't "go on a diet".  Most diets are useless.  You should really try to cut little things out and reduce your total calorie intake.  Switching to water instead of soda can save hundreds of calories a day.  Eating a salad before your meal (not a chef salad with cheese bacon and ham - a greens salad with vinagrette or reduced fat dressing at least) will fill you up a little so you don't eat as much of the calorie-rich foods at dinner.  Snack on pretzels, unbuttered popcorn, and fruit instead of candy and cookies.  You can still feel full AND lose weight, you just have to choose the right stuff to feel full with...

    Boxing is awesome for fitness, great for self defense, and really fun too.  Good luck.

  5. I started my journey into the martial arts for the same reason as you. I started at 50 years old and 305 lbs. overweight with high blood presser and chronic recurring bronchitis. I am now 105 lbs lighter, my blood pressure is 122 over 68, at rest heart rate is about 58 bpm. I haven't had more than a sniffle in several years. I started in Taekwando and lost 65 lbs the first year. Our classes started with an intense 20 min workout. Followed by rigorous drills at full speed. The classes ended with attention to technique and detail. I did 3 classes a week up to my first dan. After another year I received certification as an instructor. I'm now still teaching Taekwando and learning Wing Chun mainly because of a hip problem that leaves my kicks a lot to be desired.LOL at my age I guess it is time to slow down just a bit.

    I only say all of this to encourage you to go for it. What ever art you pursue  it only matters that you give it your all and find a good instructor. Good luck and only listen to the positive words.

  7. find out what it sin your area and check out each school and see what would work best for you, it's not so much the art but the teacher that can make a difference. I started in Tae Kwon Do and I was 6'2" and 358 and now down to 303 it wasn't the art but the instructor who helped push me.  My kicks are higher then before and my endurance is higher then ever.  I enjoy TKD but it's more the instructor then are. Just go in to have fun and work out and the discipline should come along with the study of the art.

    u should do karate as in this there r many styles i m in shito ryu style and  i m not so thin and not so fat

    i prefer karate
