Well I've been doing martial arts for 6-7 years now, I am a "black belt" in tkd and have a couple years on and off boxing training and a bit of muay thai. When it comes to sparring i consider myself pretty good at countering and throwing short combos but i still sometimes get overwhelmed with punches and no matter how much i practise combos on the bag i just cant let them fly when im sparring, usually because when someone throws a shot back at me i go into defensive mode and stop my attack.

Has anyone got advice to get used to taking shots and carrying on moving forward with a combo and also to increase aggression a bit, im not scared to get hit but it just seems imprinted in me to be a defensive fighter and i believe in the saying "attack is the best form of defense" i just need to get to grips with it. Thanks ^_^

  1. mmm, i used to be the same way when i started training MMA.

the key is...........HEADWORK. practice your slips. for you see, when you make your opponent miss, he is soo vulnerable. Another very...very useful technique ive learned is when he is rushing you, just pop your jab out. he will (most likely) stop pretty soon, then go in and bum rush him.

best way to practice getting hit is.....to get hit. Spar as much as you can...get head gear. it wil prevent you from getting cut and will soften the blows a little bit :)

i guess it kind of depends what kind of coaching you are getting too....my coach was a pro boxer for a long time and he always teaches us to just stay compact and use your weight (like for a hook, instead of reaching back and hay maker-ing...just pivot on your front foot...this way your guard stays up. Hand up, chin tucked and elbows in at all times.

this is hard to explain (much easier to show) but when you throw your jab and cross, make sure your head is behind your shoulder, that will make you invulnerable to hooks.

think about it...if you are crossing with your right...keep your left hand up. move you head towards your right shoulder a bit, and just tuck it in there. if he lands a hook, you wil take little to no damage

    Good luck!

    Paul

  2. I would suggest when the attack starts on you, take a half step/step back and to the side and kick to their body.

You'll still have your hands up for protection, but you'll still be countering.
