I got an answer one time that Buddhist monks were trained so well that they were able to win a fight with the enemy without inflicting any pain because it's believed to be bad karma if you put pain on a person

so what was this martial arts?

  1. It is not a particular martial art.

    It is whatever they learned.

What makes you think that you can only achieve this with a specialized form of martial art?

They were able to just redirect attacks because they were properly trained and adhered to the principles they were taught.

  2. um...tai chi? they incorporate a lot of pushing and avoiding the enemies because its a self-defense kind of martial arts.

  3. That's more of a Psychological warfare tactic! Like during the Vietnam war the monks lit themselves on fire to protest against the war!

  4. I don't know but it makes sense. It would seem odd for men of God to study such a violent activity as " martial arts". Which means art of war, or battle.

  5. the taichi one is wrong because tai chi is taoist. this may be a myth but there are many older ancient, 10 millenniums old styles that are rooted in Buddhist practices. bokator and ling lom are among them.the style will most likely be rooted in Theravada Buddhism or Hinayana?Buddhism. some bagua styles are Buddhist, bagua uses methods of avoiding and evasion.

  6. All I can tell you is that there is a similar Celtic legend of the 'torannchless', if that helps.

It involves a tale of a famous warrior & mentor who taught religious travellers how to disengage from a physical fight and leap over their opponent's head, to continue on their journey. I think her name was Scáthach, and as I recall, followers had to apply for this special training, conducted on a remote island somewhere in the vicinity of Scotland.

  7. It's a legend.  Someone that's going to try and kill you is not going to leave you alone unless you hurt them seriously.  This was just a legend of local origin.

  8. No it's not, you're more than allowed to hurt someone to save your life if you're a buddhist, "If someone aims a gun at your head and you have a gun yourself, shoot them in the leg, don't kill them, but ensure that no one dies" - Dalai Lama So, no, the martial art does not exist, and my guess would be that the monks intend to end the fight as quickly as possible using Qinna (known as one of the quintissential Shaolin arts) to break a finger/arm so that no one else is hurt. Definetely not Taiji, either, because why would a Buddhist monk be a master of a Taoist martial art?
