Argentine Martin Alund, 405th in the world, ousted Tiago Lopes of Brazil in two sets in the first round of qualifying draw at the 2011 Santos Brasil Tennis Open in Santos, Brazil. Santos Brasil Tennis Open is the part
of ATP Challenger Tour and it’s the first edition of the tournament.
Playing for the second time on courts, Tiago Lopes didn’t start well and lost the match in straight sets with a 5-7, 0-6 score. In the first set, Lopes hit 44 percent of the first serves, winning 71 percent of points on them. Whereas,
Alund was equally good as he hit a single ace and won 70 percent on his first serves. Alund saved 100 percent breakpoints in the set and clinched it with a 7-5 score line, going one up in the set score.
Breaking Brazilian’s serves in the fifth game, Argentine clinched the final set with a bagel and walked through to the next round. The second saw Alund performing better as he hit 69 percent of the first serves and won an outstanding
100 percent on them. Lopes on the other hand couldn’t play better and lagged behind with a meagre 30 percent.
Alund now leads their head-to-head by 2-0. He now moves on ahead to play the second round of qualifying draw against Javier Marti of Spain. Players have never met and this will be their first official head-to-head.
Gerald Melzer vs. Kaue Pereira
Austria’s Gerald Melzer, 438th in the world, defeated Kaue Pereira of Brazil in three sets in the first round of qualifying draw at the clay courts of Santos Brasil Open, Santos Brazil. Melzer took one hour and forty
five minutes to ensure his spot in the second round, defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Given their first meeting on courts, the Austrian hit five aces and 67 percent of first serves in the whole match. Pereira on the other hand struck a single ace and 70 percent of his first serves, converting 63 percent on his first
serves and 35 percent on his second serves. While Melzer converted 75 percent on his first serves and 58 percent on his second serves. The Austrian saved 71 percent of his break point opportunities and clinched the match in straight sets.
Melzer now moves on ahead to face Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina in the next round. Arguello is ranked 372nd in the ATP world rankings list and this will be the first meeting between them.
