Martin Alund upsets Caio Zampieri in the first round – BVA Open 2011 CH
Martin Alund of Argentina squared-off against the Brazilian, Caio Zampieri, in the first round of the BVA Open Challenger tournament, contested in France, on Monday October 24th. The first meeting between the two players
lasted an hour and forty-five and finally the Argentine came on top and clinched the win in straight sets with a final score of 7-6(2), 6-4. It was an enthralling battle and the Brazilian was very unlucky to have not extended the match to the third set at
least.
The Argentine was not enjoying his time at the pitch in recent past and had lost more than half of his last nine matches. It was a very good opportunity for him to make his mark and improve his record by beating a superior ranked
opponent. Brazilian had lost just three battles of his last nine and was the hot favourite to win the match but upsets happen and Alund was lucky enough to pull one yesterday.
The neck to neck battle was gist of the first set. Both players maintained an impressive serve success rate and weren’t allowing their opponent to take a long lead. Brazilian broke in eleventh game of the set but so did his opponent
in the next game and levelled the score with six games apiece.
Total of 88 points were played in the first set and the score doesn’t do justice to the Brazilian who deserved to at least stretch the match to third set because his commitment was superb. A lead of six points proved enough to
win the first set and put Zampieri on the back foot.
The double fault by the Brazilian during the tie-breaker was the turning point of the set and then he couldn’t revive from that stage and Alund made sure that he capitalized on that mistake to its fullest. Even though, Brazilian
was hot favourite to win the match, provided his form, superior ranks and local crowd advantage but he couldn’t benefit from them completely and was left trailing with one set.
Caio started the second set with an ace and didn’t look back from there. He continued to maintain a lead of two games after breaking in the second game and this proved enough at the end as the Brazilian couldn’t break once in the
second set and lost the battle. 25-year-old, Brazilian did try his best but his luck didn’t favour him.
Zampieri won 38 points in the second set whilst his opponent won 31. He smashed two aces and registered an impressive 78% first serve success rate. The first upset of the tournament was confirmed with the Argentine’s triumph in
this match.
Martin Alund is set to face-off the fifth seeded Brazilian, Souza Joao in the second round of the tournament.
