Martin Arguello and Timo Nieminen advance in qualifying draw at the Santos Brasil Tennis Open
Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina cast out Pedro Ortega of Brazil in two sets 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of Santos Brasil Tennis Open’s qualifying draw.
The Argentine, Vassallo Arguello kicked off the opener in a very aggressive fashion. He hit 57 percent of first serves and won an impressive 77 percent on them. Ortega on the other hand, performed at his worst, converting 55 percent
on his meagre 46 percent first serves. The Argentine bagged 100 percent break points and took the set with a breadstick.
In the final set, Arguello struck 78 percent of first serves and converted a whopping 83 percent points on them. Whereas his opponent lagged behind with a meagre 40 percent conversion rate on his 65 percent first serves. The Argentine
saved 100 percent breakpoints once again and advanced to the second round with double breadsticks.
Arguello has extended his match winning streak to seven matches and will face Gerald Melzer of Austria in the second round of the qualifying draw. The players have never met at any of the ATP occasions and this will going to be
their first ever head to head.
Another match was witnessed during the day where Timo Nieminen of Finland ousted Thales Levy of Brazil in two sets at the first round of qualifying draw.
In the first set, Nieminen delivered a single ace, double faulted twice and converted 62 percent on his first serves, whereas Levy double faulted once and converted 50 percent points on his 59 percent first serves. Nieminen saved
1 of 2 break point opportunities and stood victorious with a 6-3 score line.
The final set saw, Nieminen committing four double faults and hitting 58 percent of his first serves. Levy on the other hand, double faulted once and delivered 80 percent first serves. Players had a slightly different winning ratio
with Nieminen winning 48 percent on his first serves while Levy had a 43 percent gain on them. Nieminen converted five of eight breakpoint opportunities and that handed him the set with a 7-5 score line.
After this win, Nieminen has extended his winning streak to seven matches. He will face compatriot Juho Paukku in the second round of the Santos Brasil Tennis Open today. This will be the pair’s first meeting.
