Martin Brundle: Stewards were not consulted about Schumacher’s run over Hamilton – Formula 1 news
According to former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle, race stewards were not consulted about Michael Schumacher’s run with Lewis Hamilton during this past weekend at Monza for the 2011 Italian Grand Prix.
“Surprisingly, they were not asked to comment on the robust defence by Michael Schumacher from Lewis Hamilton. A steward told me after the race that he was very frustrated not to have been consulted during the race, particularly as he takes a very dim view of what he perceived as blocking,” Brundle wrote in his blog on the BBC Sport website.
Schumacher’s run at this past week’s race was praised a lot by most of his critics mainly because of his statistical performance but the German also received some criticism for defending his position a bit too safely.
“This undoubtedly confirmed Schumacher was driving in an aggressive and questionable manner, and it must be said that many teams and drivers would have appreciated this service in the past rather than being issued an immediate penalty,” Brundle added.
Both Martin Whitmarsh and Jenson Button have been quite critical of this whole situation and they claim that Schumacher’s run was not as impressive as people think it was.
Former Formula 1 driver and Red Bull brand ambassador David Coulthard on the other hand claims that the German’s performance was right on the limit and not over it quite clearly.
However, it was a very different driving style by Schumacher than usual and it was quite disappointing for some as he was just not racing and trying to hold back Hamilton without any limits.
Either way, this is what Formula 1 is in the end and a driver has the right to fight for his position no matter what. One has to admit that it was the best Michael Schumacher run since his return to the sport as he qualified in 8th place and raced his way up front before being stuck behind the top runners of the sport.
