Martin Brundle believes Lewis Hamilton is a strong title contender – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, Martin Brundle has said that Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes is a very strong contender in this year’s championship and cannot be ruled out of the title fight.
Hamilton has performed incredibly well in the season so far. He is presently standing at 4th place in the drivers’ championship with 99 points. Furthermore, he is ahead of Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and behind his major opponent, Kimi Raikkonen
of Lotus. In addition, he has secured three third-podium finishes in the season until now.
Although, the 2008 world champion has not been able to claim even single victory in the season so far despite strong qualifying performances in several races, Brundle thinks that the Briton has got the potential to win this year’s title and he must not be
ruled out of the championship fight.
Ex-F1 driver has said that even though the 28-year-old has been unable to score any wins in the season so far, he is well in the position to claim the title. Besides, he insisted that Hamilton and his teammate, Nico Rosberg, have performed impressively well
until now.
“There's a long way to go in this championship. Halfway through the Hungarian Grand Prix is halfway through the championship season, so many points to come," the former McLaren driver told Sky Sports. "Lewis is still in there. He's got some points
on the board so he's not out of sight already. He's got the pole positions, the victories haven't come his way - two have gone to Rosberg of course, his team-mate, who's driving beautifully. So I wouldn't write him off.”
In addition, he said that although the Brackley based squad will face some major problems in the season ahead because of missing the Pirelli tyre test held at Silverstone, they have got a strong car with which they can surely bounce back in the upcoming
races.
"Missing the Silverstone test will hurt them quite a lot because the tyres are fundamentally changing now for the second half of the season," he added.
It will be exciting to see how the Silver Arrows perform in the approaching races.
