Martin Dwyer injured after fall
Martin Dwyer was badly injured after a fall at Leicester in the 16:50. Dwyer who won the Epsom Derby was taken to hospital after he fell from his mount. His horse Red Lite swerved to the left in the home straight. Dwyer appeared to be heading to victory
in the final furlong of the Division 2, Aston Flamville Fillies’ Nursery, but was unseated as he lost control of the horse. Mahmood Al Zarooni’s Fluvial headed the weights in the nursery and was expected to feature. Daughter of Verglas was also expected to
produce a good performance with the ground suiting her, but neither horse came good in the end. Ruby Alexander was not tipped due to the weight she carried which was 5lbs heavier than her ride at Bath. The race was won by George Margarson’s Speedfit Girl who
was backed at 7-2 and ran well in the conditions.
There was a delay to the rest of the heats as an ambulance was summoned. Dwyer was able to speak to his father in law William Muir as he was taken to hospital. Muir who is a trainer said, “He didn’t lose consciousness, which is a good thing because it means
he didn’t bang his head. They’ve put his neck in a collar because obviously they are a bit worried about his neck. He was talking and recognised me when I came over and he said his left arm was sore.”
The jockey who will be remember for his win in the classic in 2006 on Sir Percy looks like he will be out of racing for the foreseeable future. Red Lite escaped the incident which occurred 40 yards from the finishing post. The English jockey is suspected
to have broken a collar bone in the incident.
