Martin Fischer slashes past Go Soeda into 2nd round – Salzburg Indoors 2011 CH
A local wild card enterer Martin Fischer crippled sixth seeded Japanese Go Soeda with a breadstick at the Salzburg Indoors 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event taking place at the indoor hard courts in Salzburg, Austria. He registered
a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the 27-year-old Japanese to book a round of sixteen spot on Tuesday.
World number 236 Fischer took exactly an hour to upset the Japanese, ranked 120 spots above him, on their second meeting. He not only inched towards $85,000 prize money but also advanced into the pre-quarters round.
A former world number 117, Fischer made a nervy entry at Salzburg Arena as he lost his opening serve in the second game and went 2-0 down. However, the Austrian quickly recovered in the proceeding game and after the Japanese held
his serve in the fifth game, Fischer went on a four games rampage and clinched the opener with a 6-3 win.
He failed to brush off the only breakpoint faced and cashed in all three breakpoint opportunities to his advantage. The Austrian star also clobbered a much higher first serve share of 86 percent as compared to the Japanese’s 44
percent and registered a plausible 68 percent win on it.
25-year-old Austrian kept momentum flashing into the final set and reeled off opening three games in a row before Soeda could hold on. He kept his spark enlighten and bagged in last three games as well and earned a breadstick.
The local hero again formulated a better first serve share of 68 percent as opposed to Soeda’s 50 percent and earned a spectacular 88 percent win on it. Furthermore, he defended the only breakpoint came across and capitalised on
two out of five breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
The Austrian made a terrible start of the season but lifted his game in March. He made quarter-final berths at Sarajevo, Monza, Rome, Oberstaufen, Trani, Todi and Tiburon Challenger Tour events. However, his form dipped afterwards
and he was standing on a four match losing streak before entering this event.
Next up for the wild card entrant is the winner of the match between Romanian Marius Copil and German qualifier Benjamin Becker.
Another wild card enterer Dominic Thiem faced a different fate as he exited from the tournament with a breadstick by Pole Jerzy Janowicz. He founded zero breakpoint opportunity and saved only two out of six breakpoints came across.
The Austrian also spilled several unforced errors and eventually suffered a 1-6, 3-6 loss.
