Martin Fischer takes the quarter-final place; outguns Thomas Muster in 2nd round – Todi Challenger 2011
Reigniting the Todi Challenger 2nd round on Thursday, 15th September, Martin Fischer, Austrian, survived a mid match lapse to defeat compatriot, Thomas Muster,6-0, 2-6, 7-6(2) in two hours and fifteen minutes
at the Umbria Tennis Centre, Italy.
Fischer, Aged 25, was hoping to beat down the old guy rather easily. However, what he didn’t know that when it comes to “old dogs of clay”, Muster is the guy. Ranked 200, the 25-year-old took it easy on the former world No.1 which
nearly led to a humiliating defeat.
With the 25-year-old serving first for the match, Fischer had an electrifying start. As good as it could be for the higher ranked Austrian, he nicked away with a straight games win in the first set. Breaking the 43-year-old Lord
of tennis 3 times, the younger Austrian took out the set with a bagel.  Considering that the 43-year-old would give up after getting a bagel beating was a sad assumption on Fischer’s part.
With a commanding lead the over confident “youngster”, considering his rival is 43, went down with a bang. Breaking Fischer in the opening game of set 2, Muster forehanded a winner and took on to serve the next game, 0-1.  Gaining
a two games lead, the former world No.1 maintained the lead before he spanked again, in game 7, breaking again and serving out game 8 to win the set 6-2 and levelling the scores to 1-1.
The never backing down technique worked for the younger Austrian as he went on winning marginal in the decider. Starting up slow, Fischer once again took out the first game, however, Muster followed up levelling the scores. The
decider filled up with 2 breakpoint wins for each of the contender.
Levelling up at 5-5, Muster served again and led the match 6-5 before the 25-year-old equalled up serving next. With the decider converting into a tiebreak, Fischer served first for the final showdown. Fighting like he could die
for a win, world no.200 upheld his confidence that led him to break-off the tiebreak and win the decider 7-6(2) and the match with an astonishing performance.
Ending the short run of the 43-year-old former world No.1, Fischer now sits in the quarter-final round of the 2011 Internazionali di Tennis dell'Umbria where he would face the top seed Carlos Berlocq. The top seed is expected to
win the match as he has been in ferocious form throughout the week.
