Martin Gould crashes Mark Selby in semi-final of Players Tour Championship 2010-11 Grand Final
Englishman, Martin Gould crashed compatriot, Mark Selby, 4-3, in a thrilling semi-final of PartyCasino.com Players Tour Championship 2010-11 Grand Final today, at the Helix Theatre in
Dublin, Ireland. The match ended in a decider frame after an outstanding potting display from both players. The Pinner Potter will meet the Euro PTC Event 2 winner, Shaun Murphy, in the final.
The semi-final featured some excellent breaks and impressive potting display from both players. Gould grabbed a 23-0 lead in the frame firing a decent 23 break in the very beginning of
the match, before Selby gave in a 9-point break and a foul on the blue which brought Gould back on the table. The 29-year-old Gould smashed a sensational a half century break of 57 and clinched the first frame 85-9 to get a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven frames
semi-final match.
The 2008 Welsh Open winner, Selby, did not swallow that easily as he bounced back strongly in the next frame as Gould took a 26-0 early lead in the frame again. Selby pocketed an impressive
break of 60 in the second frame which brought him 1-1 level with Gould as he clinched the second frame 78-34.
Gould showed strong determination and a beautiful demonstration of break building during the match. A couple of decent breaks of 35 and 32 in the frame three of the match took Gould to
a one frame lead again over Selby. The PTC Event 2 winner, Selby, was again put under a lot of pressure but he gathered some courage and struck back into the fourth frame and cued a smashing 59 break to equalise the match 2-2.
Gould went 2-3 down to Selby despite his cracking 69 as Selby snatched the fifth frame 69-74 firing a beautiful 32. The match was at the peak of thrill and excitement as both players tussled
towards the final match spot. A 44 from Selby brought him 5-45 lead before Gould put in 43 and 23 to nudge Selby down and take the frame 71-45. He balanced the game 3-3 and forced it to a decider frame which he took quite easily at 86-28.
The frame scores of the Gould, Selby, semi-final were 85 (57)-9, 34-78 (60), 72-26, 35-73 (59), 69 (69)-74, 71-45 and 86-28.
Gould crashed Michael Holt 4-2 in the quarter-final while the 27-year-old English cueman, Selby, took Wales’ Mark Williams out 4-3 after a sensational performance.
Gould will go head-to-head against Euro PTC Event 2 winner, Shaun Murphy, today evening. Murphy whitewashed Welshman, Matthew Stevens, 4-0 in his semi-final match of PartyCasino.com Players
