Martin Gould outplays Mark Joyce in final qualifying round – Australian Goldfields Open 2011
The Pinner Potter, Martin Gould, has beaten Mark Joyce by a frame score of 5-3 in best-of-nine frames final qualifying match of the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open tournament.
This event is being staged at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
The 27-year-old Joyce, who previously shrugged off Jimmy Robertson by a frame score of 5-3, has stumbled on the last hurdle. However, it was an accomplishing performance by Gould, as he showed great temperament to secure a place in the last 32.
It was a cutthroat competition between both Englishmen and the overall score-line between them was 77-46 (Gould 53), 13-126 (Joyce 126), 1-74 (Joyce 54), 83-0 (Gould 83), 43-72, 70-7 (Gould 66), 61-34, 78-8 (Gould 75).
In the opening frame, a few chances were exchanged before Gould knocked in a wonderful break of 53 to draw the first blood 1-0. However, any early nerves were soon removed in the second frame, as Joyce levelled things at 1-1 with a dazzling match-high break
of 126.
Joyce also took the following third with a dominant break of 54 frame to extend his lead at 1-2 but he was not given a chance in the fourth frame, as Gould clawed his way back with a mind-boggling break of 83 to level the things at 2-2 before the mid-session
interval.
On returning to the table, the first frame was a scrappy affair. A bout of safety play was seen among the players but in the end, it was Joyce who came on top to go in front at 2-3.
It appeared as if Joyce with this temperament will win the match before Gould bounced back into the game, with all of his zeal, energy and strength and won all of the following three frames in a row to seal victory.
Martin Gould after this impressive win has now set up a clash with the seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry in the last 32 which will take place in Victoria, Australia on July, 18 2011.
