Martin Gould upsets Marco Fu, 10-8 – 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship
Martin Gould has beaten Marco Fu by a frame score of 10-8 in the first round of the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, which is being held at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield,
England.
The Hong Kong’s Professional, Marco Fu, who dominated the opening session with a 3-6 lead over Gould, has fallen down in the second session. However, the Pinner Potter, Martin Gould, on
the same note, made one of the greatest comebacks to see off his experienced opponent. The overall score-line between both players was 80-19 (70), 137-0 (97), 0-80 (80), 81-0 (81), 95-24 (63), 59-72, 115-0 (115), 95-0 (56), 38-75, 33-91 (66), 3-71, 0-103,
30-75 (51), 73-10, 126-0 (100), 6-90 (56) and 15-82.
The thirty-three-year-old, Fu, who fired up breaks like 70, 97, 81, 63, 115 and 56 in the first round, was looking pretty much near to reach the finish-line before his twenty-nine-year-old
opponent turned the tables on him.
Gould produced high standards of game and clinched the first five frames in a row to turn his three frame deficit into a two frame advantage, 8-6. Meanwhile he also enjoyed decisive breaks
of 66 and 51 in the second and the fifth frame respectively.
There was a shock on the cards before the world number twenty-one, Fu, also bounced back, with all of his zeal energy and strength, and levelled the scores by 8-8. The Hong Kong Fuey in
the meanwhile also showcased a magnificent break of 100 in the sixteenth frame.
Though it looked as if Fu has gained his momentum back and is going to secure a place in the last-16, he lost the following eighteenth and nineteenth again. The world number twenty-two,
Gould, held his nerves and pocketed the last two frames with a prominent break of 56 in the eighteenth to seal his victory.
This is the second consecutive time Gould has beaten Fu in the first round of the Betfred.com World Snooker Champion. He has now set up a potential clash with the Bristolian-ace, Judd
Trump, in the second round.
