Martin Gould’s shocking comeback knocks out local hero Ding Junhui – 2011 Shanghai Masters
The Pinner Potter, Martin Gould, who currently holds the 20th spot in the world rankings, dumped out the Chinese local hero Ding Junhui by a frame score of 5-3 in a best-of-nine frames opening round match of the 2011
Bank of Communication Shanghai Masters tournament on Wednesday.
The 2011 Shanghai Masters tournament is being held at the Shanghai Grand Stage in Shanghai, China.
It was an accomplishing performance from the Englishman Gould, as he was down by 0-3 before he battled his way back and registered a shocking 5-3 win over the heavily favourite for the match, Junhui. For Junhui on the other hand it was a nightmare as he
squandered his three-frame lead.
The 24-year-old, Junhui, who holds the 4th position in the world rankings, stormed into a 3-0 lead with top breaks of 52 and 70 before losing the next five frames in a row.
Gould knocked in a break of 62 in the fourth frame and then a magnificent break of 88 helped him to come within one frame at 2-3. Sixth and seventh frames were both scrappy but it was again Gould who appeared on top in both frames to go in front at 4-3.
The last frame between both players was a thriller, as it went down to the colour ball before Gould won it with a cracking black ball’s pot.
“Even at 3-0 down I knew I was cueing well,” said Gould, who boosted his own chances of a top 16 place for the first time. “I managed to win the fourth frame, then at the interval I was able to regroup.”
Gould added, “When I was faced with the black in the last frame I didn't fancy it at all and thought about playing safe. But I decided to go for it and it was lovely to see it drop.”
Martin Gould will now be facing the Welsh Dragon, Matthew Stevens, in the next round. Let’s see if Gould once again produces brilliant results and sees off the Welshman.
