Martin Jeppesen returns home and cruises into lead at the Tournament of Champions
Martin Jeppesen held off a barrage of challengers at Michigan PGA's Tournament of Champions by shooting a four-under par 68 in the second round to take a three-way lead into Wednesday’s final round.
Jeppesen, who shot a two-under par 70 in the opening round, remained consistent in the changing weather at the Boyne Mountain Resort Alpine, on Tuesday, to get in front at six-under.
J.R. Roth and the opening round sole leader Tim Matthews were the other two players who settled for a six-under par two-round score.
David Nolan and the amateur Wesley Gates trailed the above mentioned players after recording a five-under par after two rounds.
Jeppesen recently returned home from the E-Tour in order to participate in the prestigious event. He told that he always enjoys returning to the event and always finds it exciting to make his appearance count each time.
He also expressed his ambition of winning the tournament in his home state, which, according to him, is a great feat to achieve.
"It's tough out there, but it seems like every time I come back home I do OK," said Jeppesen, an Ypsilanti resident who will attempt to qualify for the PGA Tour in the fall.
"I love coming up to this tournament and I've played well both years I've come up here. To win a PGA event of your own state – it always means something".
Jeppesen did not enjoy his start in the tournament, as he recorded a double bogey, followed by two bogeys over the first three holes he played on Monday.
However, he completely reversed his performance on day two and opened his account with a birdie on the first hole.
He was four-under through 10 holes with the help of four birdies. However, he bumped a bit and suffered a bogey on the 11th hole. A couple of birdies on the 13th and 16th hole, followed by a bogey on the final hole allowed
him to settle on top of the leaderboard.
He now aims to remain consistent in the final round in order to make his dream come true of winning the home tournament, which features only the Michigan PGA Tour winners.
