Martin Kampmann nails Thiago Alves by surprising submission win on UFC on FX2 – UFC news
In a thrilling skirmish put forth by Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in its epic pay-per-view ‘UFC on FX 2’, Martin Kampmann collected a huge surprising win over Thiago Alves by making him submit in just the final seconds of third round via guillotine
choke.
The two brawlers were scheduled to headline the pay-per-view which was televised on March 3, 2012 from Allphones Arena situated in Sydney, Australia. Both men were colliding in the welterweight division non-title bout.
From the very start, Alves unleashed his raw power and took Martin on his fists and kicks. Interestingly the whole crowd was confident that the Brazilian pounder is winning. But things changed instantly when Thiago’s simple mistake cost him the whole bout.
Martin, infamous as the ‘Hitman’, was entering in his career’s 24th battle. He has won 18 of his total brawls, six by submission, seven by knockout, and four by decision. The 29-year-old was coming from a unanimous win over Rick Story and was expected to
put more heart in the bout in order to strengthen his winning streak which got tarnished by two consecutive losses against Diego Sanchez and Jake Shields.
Alves, 28, widely known as the ‘Pitbull’, was a bit more experienced than Martin. He was entering the octagon for 28th time and has emerged victorious in a total 19 bouts. Infamous as the knockout specialist, Thiago, has collected 11 of his wins by knockout,
two by submission, and six by decision.
Martin was unable to counter or block the vicious Brazilian assault and kept on taking the punishment. In the first round, Martin was able to throw just one productive huge kick which connected Alves face but it did not intimidate the ‘Muay Thai wrecking
machine’ and later on Thiago bashed Martin by his own takedown.
Things started to get nasty for Martin since Thiago was the one getting clean shots and hits which made the former extremely frustrated. With the start of the third round, even Martin’s corner-men told him to go for the submission since he was seriously
outpointed by Alves.
In the last few seconds of the third round, Martin took advantage of Alves’ mistake and locked him in his guillotine choke to collect a huge submission win.
After the brawl, when asked as to why he was unable to counter Alves, Martin commented, “What are you talking? I was doing great. Nah, Thiago caught me with some good shots. He was catching me. I wanted to strike with him, but I also wanted to take him down.
But he's got good takedown defense. I felt I was definitely behind. I was taking too many punches going into the clinch.”
Thiago has collected his career’s ninth defeat and Martin has grabbed his 19th win, seventh by submission. The special edition was the second that was televised on FX and the third show in Australia. Martin submission win also grabbed the submission of the
night award.
