Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods race to the top
The race to number one is really heating up now. With three contenders up for it, all three will have to show what they got to be considered the best. Including Tiger Woods, Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood are in the race to either remain or reach to the
top of the world rankings.
It was declared that Lee Westwood will replace Tiger Woods on October 31st, however with Martin Kaymer’s decision to play Andalucia Valderrama Masters in Spain from October 28-31. It looks like the German could mess up Westwood’s plan. Martin
Kaymer is the hottest thing in golf right now with having an amazing winning streak this year. Winning the USPGA Championship, the KLM Open and now the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Kaymer is definitely on a role. Being number four at the moment, Kaymer
does have a chance to leap to number one. Looking at the way he is going, there is a very high possibility of Martin winning yet another tournament.
The German player himself doesn’t know why he’s doing so well. He was also a member of the triumphant Ryder Cup team. Martin said he wasn’t expecting such an amazing winning streak. Guess all the hard work and the practice really paid off. Kaymer said that
he always played solid golf and that his short game has enhanced over the past few months. He said almost everyone can hit but it’s the putting that counts. Even though Martin is on the way to leading the Europe money list, he is not best in the world yet.
The best player for Kaymer himself is Lee Westwood, who was his Ryder Cup partner. Kaymer said that the way Westwood played with him was remarkable. He said including his putting, the entire game was fantastic. Kaymer considers Westwood his role model.
The announcement of Wood’s replacement was confirmed since Tiger Woods himself won’t be playing in any tournament this month. Lee could have deposed Tiger as No. 1 if he had achieved a top-two finish at the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. Following
an amazing performance in the Ryder Cup, Westwood was left helpless in Scotland when his calf injury recurred. Westwood had taken a six-week break before the Ryder Cup in order to be in a good shape. Even though everything was fine in Wales, his calf flared
up again. Lucky for Lee, the way the rankings are calculated, he really doesn’t have to do anything and will reach No.1 given that Woods doesn’t play this month. The only obstacle remaining now is fellow European and Ryder Cup teammate Martin Kaymer.
Lee Westwood has shown an amazing comeback if one reflects nine years back. There was one time that Lee‘s ranking had sunk from four to even outside the top 250.
"A lot of guts, determination, a lot of soul-searching at times, taking responsibility for my own golf swing and finding and listening to just one person -- me," he said. Lee fought and by the looks of it he fought well to be where he is right now. Due to
the recurrence of his injury, he will not take part in any tournament until the World Golf Championship-HSBC Champions in Shanghai at the start of November. Tiger Wood’s next advent will be in Shanghai as well.
As for the current number one, he must be going through a pretty tough time. Having the privilege of being the ‘best’ for five years now, he must be used to the special attention given to him. Tiger Woods really let his personal life affect his game. Last
November, Tiger and his ex-wife Elin Nordegren got in a car accident following which news of his infidelity and various s*x scandals came out. Even though they went through marital counseling and tried a lot, the couple called it quits in August when they
got a divorce. Even though Westwood might replace him, it looks like he won’t let go of ‘his’ spot that easy. Steve Williams, Woods' long-time Kiwi bagman, thinks he will end this year and go into 2011 on a good note.
With all three players playing the best they can, the number one spot will go to the one who truly deserves it.
