Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, Charl Schwartzel and others praise Luke Donald for the unprecedented feat
World number one Luke Donald has been receiving tons of praise from everywhere especially his fellow professional players both on the PGA as well as the European Tour, for his unprecedented feat of leading the Money Lists on both sides of the Atlantic. The
34-year-old Englishman had been leading the money lists, the Race to Dubai and the FedExCup for a considerable time throughout the year and has finally finished at the top of both lists, making him the only player in the history to achieve the milestone. He
finished joint third in last week’ s Dubai World Championship, the season-ending event on the European Tour, overtaking his nemesis Rory McIlroy, who threatened to take away his lead on the money list. McIlroy, who was not feeling well under the effect of
some acquired virus, finished well below the leaderboard.
Players from both sides have been praising Donald for his remarkable feat. Alvaro Quiros, winner of the Dubai World Championship, lauded Donald’s resilience and regarded him as the toughest fighters on the circuit at the moment. He referred to his third
round stroke average for the year which is around 67.5 and termed it as an amazing average.
“To win the two money lists in America and then Europe is an amazing achievement and he is without doubt the best player in the world right now. No-one can argue with that – he is incredible.” said Quiros.
US Open champion of the year McIlroy also showered his praise for apparently the only man standing between him and the number one spot on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). McIlroy moved from number six on the OWGR to his current high of number two
and is all set to barge on a blistering year in 2012 and has also given a go-ahead to a membership at the PGA. And while he praised Donald for his exceptional feat, he also mentioned the fact that the Englishman has not won a single major as yet, probably
trying to take a jab at the world number one.
“I think from within the golfing family he’ll receive a lot of applause for what he’s done this year, but unfortunately maybe people outside the golfing world think that even though he’s won four times, there will always be that question of ‘is he the real
No. 1 because he's not got a Major?” said McIlroy.
Charl Schwartzel, the Masters Champion also lauded Donald’s amazing achievement and praised his consistency throughout the year. Martin Kaymer, who has now surged to world number four, also commended Donald’s efforts to reach the milestone and said that
surging to the top of the money lists on both continents in a single year beacons to the fact that Donald has played amazing golf all over the world. Sergio Garcia, who is also experience a resurgence in his career said that at times when Donald has not won
an event, he has managed to remain in top-five or top-ten somehow, which increased his chances to surge to the top on the money lists.
Among many other renowned professional players who came out with their praise for the world number one, Tom Lehman, Sam Torrance and
Robert Karlsson were among the few.
