Martin Kaymer, an inspiration for the European young players
Martin Kaymer is being hailed as a hero by the Germans, following the excellent display of his form that led the European team to thrash the US team in the Ryder Cup last week. The event was held at the Medinah Country Club from September 28 to 30, 2012.
Not just the Germans, Kaymer has become equally popular among golf players and fans, especially the younger crop in other European countries.
Bernd Ritthammer, a professional golfer from Germany, said that he, along with his fellow compatriots, looks to follow Kaymer’s path that has led him to the higher echelons of the sport.
Kaymer burst on the golf scene when he recorded a victory in the Vodafone Challenge on home soil, during his rookie season on the European Challenge Tour.
A month later, he added another victory to his resume, when he won the Open des Volcans and booked his place for the tier-one European Tour for the next season.
Kaymer’s quick rise to the bigger stage and now proving his mettle in the Ryder Cup is something that inspires Ritthammer.
Last year, Ritthammer made it to the European Tour for the 2012 golf season through Q-School. Since then, he has not been able to perform well on the bigger stage.
Yet, he is optimistic about rising on the bigger stage just like Kaymer did in his times.
“I didn’t get to watch the singles live because I was on the plane from Catalunya and then in a car,” said Ritthammer. “I did watch the highlights on the European Tour website though and I’m going to watch it in full another time.
“Of course there was an extra bit of pride as a German. Martin got quite a bit of criticism from the German media this year and I’m happy for him,” he added. “He didn’t play a great Ryder Cup but he holed his putts when it mattered and not many people are
able to do that, but he is”.
Ritthammer is now scheduled to participate in this week’s ALLIANZ Open de Lyon, a European Challenge Tour event, slated to start from October 4 to 7, 2012.
