Martin Kaymer, including notable players, fail to make the cut-line at Masters – Masters News
At the conclusion of the second round at Masters, it was a disappointing affair for a few and some players were overwhelmed with the way they played at Augusta National Golf Club. The course certainly paid dividends to many who worked hard before the major
tournament.
It was a day for misery for the big guns who failed to make it through the cut-line. Currently world number one, Martin Kaymer, of Germany again looked wayward. It was rather the pressure of holding onto his number one spot which got to his mind. Kaymer
did not look comfortable during the two rounds he played.
This was Kaymer’s fourth straight outing here at Augusta National where the tournament is taking place. He again failed to make it through the cut-line score which was set at one-over par. The top tied 43 players qualified to play on the weekend.
The German now is in danger of losing his number one ranking as players like Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson are in red numbers. Westwood is just five strokes behind and also in contention of winning the green jacket.
Kaymer only has won a single major in his career. Last year he won the PGA Championship which was a confidence booster for him. It was rather his past record at Masters which was in back of his mind. There are chances that he will not be able to retain his
ranking after the conclusion of the tournament.
The 26-year-old German had a two day score of six-over par, 150. Although he managed a modest round of even-par, 72 on the second day, it was not enough for him to make it among the playing contenders on the weekend.
Along with Kaymer, 2007 Masters Winner Zach Johnson also was among the players to miss the cut. It was sheer disappointment for him as he only missed it by a single stroke. Johnson only needed a birdie on the last hole to make it through, but it was rather
too difficult for him.
World number five Graeme McDowell who won last year’s U.S. Open title also was placed below the cut-line mark. He was also among the notable players who failed to play on the weekend. There are chances that McDowell might slip on the golf rankings.
Three-time major title winner Padraig Harrington of Ireland also was not able to put up a good show during the two rounds he played. He was placed at a total of five-over par, four strokes behind the cut-line mark.
It was upsetting for all these notable players and major title holders to have missed the cut. Either the course was playing too tough for them, or it was their swing which was not in momentum.
Much was expected from these top ranked and major championship holders to perform well. This tournament continues to halt Kaymer as one was expecting much more from him.
