Martin Kaymer's world number one dreams crushed once again
Alas, the Commercialbank Qatar Masters have crushed Martin Kaymer’s dream of earning a spot right at the top of the world rankings, as Lee Westwood came out on top maintaining his World Number One position.
All Kaymer had to do was finish first or second in the tournament to dethrone Westwood, who had missed the halfway cut. However, the German finished well off place and in the process further cemented Westwood’s place as the top dog of golf.
Kaymer left the Doha Golf Club course carding a final round of 71. This meant that he finished in the top 20 at two under par, as the scoreboard leaders headed into the final nine holes. Kaymer had been hoping for at least a top 10 finish but the Qatar course
does not seem to suit his style of play at all.
The weather condition also did not seem to be in the German golfer’s favour. With strong winds at Doha, the player could not manage a single birdie and finished with a score of 77 in the first round. A very sharp contrast when compared to his performance
at Abu Dhabi, where he scored a final round 66, just two weeks prior to the Qatar Masters.
The golfer, while being disappointed with his performance, maintains a positive outlook. He told reporters that he was pleased with his performance because he was lying on the 80th spot after his first round but had jumped into the top 20 during
the next two days.
Also, there is the fact that his latest stint at the Qatar Masters is his best performance in the event to date. In his previous three attempts at the title he has gotten no higher that the 31st spot.
The player said that now he was just looking to put the Doha episode behind him and move on to concentrating on the Omega Dubai Desert Classic tournament, which starts later this week. He will be joined on the field in Dubai by Lee Westwood and former world
number one Tiger Woods, who is currently on the third spot in the rankings.
The event holds a lot of significance as it will be the first time since October last year that the top three players in the world are contesting for the same title.
The pressure is on! However, Kaymer is determined to maintain his cool and has told reporters, “I'm not worried about being number one or Tiger going past me and pushing me back to number three as long as I am in the top five on the rankings”.
