Martin Kaymer: Open Championship is my favourite major
World number three Martin Kaymer came out and revealed his love for The Open Championship and hailed it as his favourite major, owing to the mental fatigue it throws towards the best golfers of the world. The German, who failed to prove his prowess in the
season’s first two majors, believes the Open will bring the best out in him.
Kaymer arrived at the par-71 Royal St George’s Sandwich in Kent, England for practice sessions ahead of the championship. After hitting the balls all through the mornning, the German headed towards the clubhouse to address the press.
Shedding light on his admiration for the tournament and the course, Kaymer said, “It’s a favourite golf tournament all year. It’s a fantastic major, the only one that we have in Europe. (But) the Open is so different than all the other tournaments, and that
makes it very special and new. You have to be very creative and you have to think a lot, and mentally it’s very tiring.”
While comparing the Open Championship with the two majors that take place on American soil; the US Open and US PGA, Kaymer was of the opinion that the US Open and US PGA were like normal tournaments, with just more difficult conditions. On the other hand,
the Open Championship demanded extensive planning because of the severity of the weather conditions and the difficult layout.
Another reason for Kaymer’s love for the Open Championship is the fact that it is the only European major. It has significance in terms of it being more of a home championship and hence the reason for every European golfer to wait for it all year long.
Despite having huge admiration for the Open, Kaymer has not been much of a delight to watch in his last three appearances here. He finished 80th in 2008, T34 in 2009 and T7 last year.
While commenting on his last three finishes, the 26-year-old said, “Of course some days you get some good breaks, some days you get some bad breaks, but that is what the golf course and the golf tournament is about.”
Kaymer missed the cut at the Masters, finished in T39 at the US Open and is now waiting to go all out in the Open championship and reclaim his lost glory.
