Martin Kaymer backs Rory McIlroy despite failure at the Masters – Golf news
World number one seed Martin Kaymer backed Rory McIlroy and showed faith in his abilities after he squandered his chances on wearing a green jacket in the Masters.
The German said, “Everybody has to learn how to be in the position that he has been in. He is a fantastic player.”
Kaymer gave that statement after he discussed McIlroy’s position in golf. He said that the player was still a rookie and had a long way to go in his career. He also stressed that the Northern Irish was 21 years of age and had the advantage of youth on his
side.
McIlroy is the seventh seed in the world with a career full of achievements. The Northern Irishman won the Dubai Desert Classic just a few months later after turning a pro in 2009. He shot the lowest possible score in the opening round of the Open Championship
in 2010 and followed it with a victory in the Quail Hollow Championship where he had a four-stroke edge over Phil Mickelson. Owing to his fast track acceleration, the rookie was picked by Colin Montgomerie for the 2010 Ryder Cup, where he performed brilliantly
and contributed in the victory with 2 points.
However, his excellent performances do not stop here. The 21-year-old stepped into the Masters with another low scoring result and held onto the top of the leader board until Sunday which shovelled him into the 15th spot. That was sheer bad luck,
but similar fate revived itself in the Maybank Malaysian Open, where the curly-hair golfer held tightly onto the lead, but bogeyed the last hole of the final round to surrender the title to Brendan Steele.
Devastated at the loss, McIlroy packed bags and flew back home to relax his mind. In times like these, Kaymer backed him in front of the media and said that he would have his chance some day as he had the age on his side.
Kaymer has been supporting his fellow golfers for quite some time. Recently, he supported former world number one Tiger Woods and said that everyone honoured him in the game.
