Martin Kaymer backs the idea of a World Tour
Martin Kaymer, the blue-eyed German golfer who was on the summit of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) just a month ago, has come out to throw his weight behind the idea of a World Tour, something which might be on the cards of European and PGA Tour
officials.
Kaymer was talking to the reporters on Tuesday June 7, during a presentation ceremony at the Atlanta Athletic Club where the PGA Championship will be held in August.
The German said, “I think Tim Finchem and George O’Grady, they’re talking about a world tour at the moment. I think it will take maybe another two, three years, but I think eventually it will come, and then people if they want to or not, they have to travel.”
Kaymer was also critical of the Americans' apathy towards the rest of the golf tours around the world and also cited that they needed to travel and participate more on an international level to promote the sport in the US.
“We’d probably have to travel more. Actually for us Europeans, we probably might stay the same, but maybe the American players might have to travel more because there might be big tournaments in Asia coming up or bigger tournaments in Europe, as well.” Kaymer
added.
Only two Americans showed up for the BMW PGA Championship, what many of the top ranking European golfers regarded as the “fifth major” in the world. American players, on the other hand, often argue that with the tournaments going on the PGA Tour almost every
week with highest ranking points and prize money, it makes little sense to fly to another continent for a few tournaments.
Kaymer also hoped that the format of the World Tour would include the Asian Tour players and a neutral venue may be selected for the same. He suggested that the officials from the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the Asian Tour as well as the guys from Dubai
and Japan can formulate a single world major for the sport with the highest prize money and ranking points.
Kaymer also revealed that he started off by playing several events in Asia as well as the US, let alone in Europe and had to design different clubs for different venues, something which helped him transform into a more seasoned golfer.
