Martin Kaymer beats Bubba Watson to win 92nd USPGA Championship
To decide the winner of the 92nd USPGA Championship, the final round entered into a playoff between Martin Kaymer, Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson.
The three players settled down with a score of 11 under right after their 18th hole. As it is a rule in golf, a playoff decides the final winner if there is more than one leader. The three players entered the three-hole playoff in the presence of bizarre winds that did not stop. However, to their surprise, one player, Dustin Johnson, was struck out before the starting of the playoff in result of a penalty. Dustin Johnson was found grounding his clubs in a sand bunker, which he presumed was merely a small mound. Not to forget there are 1000 large sand bunkers and 254 small sand bunkers on the Whistling Straits course. Moreover, most of them could not be easily identified and hard luck befell Dustin Johnson.
However, the playoff started between Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson in the presence of strong winds. The weather was terrible throughout the four- day session. In fact, twice there was a delay of 3- 4 hours between the rounds. Bubba Watson took the first shot of the playoff from the 10th tee delivering a 2 –foot birdie putt, to which Martin Kaymer responded with a par. Both the players walked to the 17th tee, where Martin Kaymer made a beautiful 15 foot putt at the 17th hole. As for the spectators, both players were giving an equally tough time to each other.
According to experts, the only difference that was observed between the two players was that Martin Kaymer was far too confident. His shots showed the right amount of aggressiveness and calmness that was required.
On the other hand Bubba Watson seemed terribly nervous and quite soon little was expected from him keeping in view his mental and physical status. After all what they say is more often correct that, a game is won with a combined effort of a stable mind and a strong gut. Martin Kaymer had already won the game with his calmness. It was Bubba Watson who was waiting for the results.
However, both the players, Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer, moved towards the final hole that was about to decide their fate. The tee shots were safe for both the players but when it came to the second shot, Bubba Watson found himself in trouble. Although, Bubba Watson planned it well when he drove the first shot into the right rough.
As a token of remembrance, Bubba Watson is known for his monstrous shots out of the roughs. He holds the record of never hitting a ball straight which means he can hit the green even after missing the fairway. This is what Bubba Watson was expecting when he took his second shot. Unfortunately, the shot was short of 206 yards, that were required to reach the front of the 18th green and the ball fell into water. Watson tried to hit the flag but it tripped and the result was a double bogey 6.
Moving forward to the 18th hole of Martin Kaymer, he too was in trouble when his first shot got him stuck in the rough and he scored a bogey 5. But to his luck, Watson had done enough damage to his scorecard that a single Bogey was no threat to him. Martin Kaymer won the playoff to claim his victory on the USPGA championship, 2010.
To sum it up, this was the final playoff between Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson on the course of Whistling Straits, Wisconsin. Martin Kaymer a 25-year old German came out on top. According to experts, Martin played very well. It was against expectations that he walk away with the prize money of $7.5million and the cut into Ryder Cup team. On the whole, he was confident and this was exactly that was required in the last moments of the game.
