Martin Kaymer becomes new world number one after reaching finals of Accenture Match Play
German pro golfer Martin Kaymer has replaced Lee Westwood as the world’s number one player after reaching the finals of the Accenture Match Play in Arizona. Kaymer will be facing Englishman Luke Donald in the final today.
2010 PGA Championship winner Kaymer is one of the most talented players in the world right now. Westwood, who dethroned Tiger Woods, not so long ago in October 2010 got out of the championship after the second round. Leaving his rank open for conquer, Westwood,
would be wishing he stayed in the championship long enough.
Kaymer defeated American Bubba Watson at the Dove Mountain Golf Course to reach the final round. Kaymer has become the fourteenth player to the top ranking and is the second youngest player to become world number one. The ex-top cat of golf, Woods was 21
when he became the world number one in June 1997. Kaymer is the second German player to reach the world number one rank after Bernhard Langer. Langer was the first number one when the world ranking system was creating during the 1986 Masters. Kaymer, ending
Westwood’s 17-week reign at the masters, said it was a proud moment for him, his family and the people who helped him and of course, his country – Germany.
Though Martin Kaymer is ranked number one, he is still waiting for another win before he starts celebrating. Winning the World Golf Championships is the player’s main goal. He said he would feel like he deserved it.  Kaymer said it’s not like he didn’t deserve
to be the highest-ranked player, he would feel much better if he won the Match Play championship.
English player Lee Westwood won only three times during his time as world number one.  As for Kaymer, he has won seven times in the last two years, including the major win at Whistling Stairs. When Kaymer was asked who the number one player was, he said
it was still Westwood “... until Monday at least”.
Of all the people behind Kaymer’s success, he paid special tribute to his caddie, f***y Sunesson. The player said that Sunesson had made him the player he was.
“f***y and me, we know each other seven or eight years now," said the 26-year-old Kaymer. “She was helping us out in the national team when I was an amateur. She was talking about course management and strategy and some experiences that she had with Nick
Faldo and I found it very interesting.”
Reminiscing back to the day when he was still in qualifying school, Kaymer said he would always call her for suggestions on the course or just to discuss golf shots. Even though Sunesson now works for Henrik Stenson, she still remains an important person
in Kaymer’s life.
