Martin Kaymer bidding for number one spot at BMW PGA Championship
World number three Martin Kaymer is all set to take back his ‘spot number one’ throne with the onset of BMW PGA Championship, which is about to hit the Wentworth Golf Course in Surrey on 26th of May and will run through
29th of the month.
The German spoke about his intentions during the press conference held at the clubhouse of Wentworth and said that he was looking forward to compete in one of the finest fields for the title. He thanked the European tour for giving
him a chance to visit a fascinating venue like the West course at Wentworth and test his prowess against the undulating fairways and softer greens.
Kaymer stated, “I think it’s probably the best field we have ever had here. It’s a fantastic venue and always a tournament I wanted to win as it is the home of The European Tour. It would be fantastic to raise the trophy one day.”
The nine-time winner at European tour has been paired up with Master Champion Charl Schwartzel in the first two rounds. Apart from facing a tough competition from the South African, he will also face the direct attacks of US Open
Champion, Graeme McDowell and Open Champion, Louis Oosthuizen.
The German said he knew he had to perform to his fullest to outdo the top guns of the world. This is his chance to resurge into the top, but to attain the results; he will have to bypass world number one, Lee Westwood and world
number two, Luke Donald.  Both the Englishmen are carrying a strong form and it is evident from the last few months’ aftermath in which Donald won a title and finished second in Volvo Match Play Championship, whereas, Westwood bagged two back-to-back trophies.
He also shed light on the current scenario of the Official World Golf Rankings in which five of the top six spots are occupied by Europeans.
He said, “Everyone was thinking only the Americans could win Majors – Tiger, Phil and those guys. At the moment there are so many great golfers that it is not always about the top five in the world. There are 20, 30 or 40 guys
who can win a Major these days and that’s exciting, and I think we are very fortunate to have a lot of Europeans up there.”
