Martin Kaymer blames the lightening fast greens at Augusta National the reason behind his mammoth loss
Martin Kaymer, the highest ranked German player on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), succumbed to the antics of the treacherous Augusta National yet again, falling for a disappointing joint 44th.
This was the first time in Kaymer’s career that he was able to make it through the halfway cut in his five appearances.
The 27-year-old has now fallen to world number seven from a high of number four just a week ago and has just landed in Malaysia for his Maybank Malaysian Open bid.
Kaymer said, “Overall I was disappointed with my result [at The Masters] because I played really good golf until I was on the green. After that I struggled a little bit. I think my average putts everyday was 34. That’s a lot. I’m happy with the way that
I’m hitting the ball but obviously those greens are very difficult”.
In his past four starts at Augusta National, Kaymer has never been able to make it through the halfway cut.
He barely managed to stay alive in the event after shooting sloppy opening rounds of even-par and three-over respectively.
Winner of no fewer than 18 professional titles in his relatively short career, Kaymer started off the current season with a disappointing run on the leaderboards.
He failed to make the cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, where he is often called as the “King of Abu Dhabi”.
He has won three out of the last four events in Abu Dhabi before his colossal fall this year.
He also fared badly in the rest of the European Tour events scheduled in South Africa and Middle East and has been battling form vows for a while.
Kaymer has a stellar record on the windy Asian turf and has won several professional titles, wrestling against the sturdy Asian players.
Despite of a brilliant career record, it comes as a surprise that Kaymer has never been able to perform well at Augusta National.
He was never able to break par this year, falling for consecutive bogeys on the front nine.
Being a former world number one and winner of the 2010 PGA Championship, Kaymer will be eager to master the treacherous Augusta National for better results in the future.
