Martin Kaymer closes his season with 69 at Jumeirah
Former ranked player, Martin Kaymer could not capitalise on his fast start to DP World Tour Championship, as he finished way below everybody’s expectations, at 28th.
Kaymer teed off at Jumeirah Golf Estates with a bogey-free round of 67 on Thursday but, from there on, it was a downhill drive for the German.
The German could not carry forward his first round’s performance, as he faltered in the second and the third round by failing to score in the 60s.
Martin shot two-under, 70, on Friday followed by a disappointing even-par round on Saturday.
Much was expected from the world number 32 at the DP World Tour Championship. Being a former major winner, people expected him to shine in Dubai but the German made some silly errors, especially on Saturday, to pull him down.
Though there was some respite for Martin Kaymer, as he carded a 69 on Sunday, to leave the field at Jumeirah Golf Estates with some confidence.
The Race to Dubai was already settled as Rory McIlroy clinched it with his third place finish at BMW Masters. However, Kaymer, being a former top player, was tipped to be a major title contender.
The way he started off, it seemed that Kaymer was on his way to something special but a string of errors cost him badly.
The German was in a decent form, as he was shooting plenty of birdies but his errors made him pay the price.
Eight bogeys and a double bogey over the course of four rounds are just not acceptable at this standard.
When one is facing the likes of Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald, something special is needed for a victory.
Donald was pretty good off the tee shots but it was his approach shots that cost him dearly. Playing on a course like the one at Jumeirah, one has to make decent approaches as the greens are extremely tricky.
Reading the greens in Dubai was a major headache for the players and so it seemed for Kaymer as well, as he failed to produce something special.
