Martin Kaymer commits to play the European Tour’s Portugal Masters
Martin Kaymer is relishing the opportunity to return to the Portugal Masters, where he thrashed the field in 2007, with an 11-under par 61 in the opening round, to a set a course record.
Even though, he failed to win the title during his rookie season, he provided the golfing world with a hint of being a superstar of the future.
Soon after four years, he became the number one player in the world, after a second-place finish at the 2011 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
After finishing tied for the seventh position in 2007, his career received an upturn, with two victories in each of the 2008 and 2009 European Tour seasons.
The 2010 season witnessed him adding four titles to his resume, including his maiden major championship at the PGA Championship.
He then maintained his form in 2011 and recorded another two victories on the European Tour, including a win in the HSBC Champions, the first World Golf Championship title of his career.
This year, he has not won a single event and wants to end the winning drought, heading into the last few tournaments left on the European schedule.
He now desperately waits for the tournament at the Oceanico Victoria Golf Course, which is among his favourite stops on the European Tour.
He expressed, “I’m really looking forward to playing in Portugal again this year. I think it is one of the best golf courses we play all year and I always look forward to going back. It has a good prize fund, a good field and is a very important part of
my schedule”.
“We can stay in the hotel on site and the course itself is excellent. I’ve finished seventh and eighth in the past and it’s good to know that I still have the course record at 11 under par from five years ago”.
Despite remaining winless during the current season, he also made it to the European Ryder Cup team that will contend against its US counterparts at the Medinah Country Club this month.
This week, he is set to participate in the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi, and return back to his form that he lost early in the season.
